The natural oil from you're hand's will usually stop the skimmer in it's track's for a while. That's if you're hand's are extremely clean. That's usually not the case though. My hand's are covered in diesel fuel and oil every day, then there is the soap residues. Niccoteen residue if you smoke. I'd say there is a long list of reason's.

ok, i say leave it the way it is. the tank is only 12" deep. i am guessing this is a BB tank. i do not think you need as much light as think you do. if you really feel you need more light, than just add another PC bulb.
quit screwing with things whiskey!!! if this is working let it work. then see if you can figure out why it works and the other did not. do not go messing it up because you "think" it will help. no offence, but your track record for helping changes has not been that good.
i say let it be, do the normal maintenance on it and see if it keeps working. do not try optimizing anything yet. let it teach you, not the other way around. keep your Ca and alk reasonable.

Ya brown corals are a real drag, even my purple digi that has been in there a while has gone brown
Slap slowly eh? Only in this hobby would that have any effect
I hear where you are coming from Geoff, thanks for chiming in, it is always good to have the other point of view, helps me to think about if I am doing the right thing. I am perty sure I know what I did wrong in the 50 though, I mis-read the signs, then got advice based on my misinterpretation. It was only when I pushed it too far that I was able to realize my error.
Thanks,
Whiskey

Adding another PC bulb was my first thought, but I can't fit another one under that hood.

No argument here, that is part of the reason I am jumpy about changing anything, though brown corals get old fast.
In my defence, every other change has been to a tank that doesn't work to start with, this time it is to improve a tank that (knock on wood) does.

Ca and ALK are at 425 and 9.0, the Kalk reactor seems to keep it there well, so far,...
Thanks,
