The plastic is kinda hard, not real soft like a rubbermaid. I always thought that was due to air, there are holes in the handles and the lid does not fit really tight so some air can get in there.

food safe?
I havent ever used anything that is food safe, I dont see any problem with using stuff that isnt, as long as you clean it. I usually let whatever im going to use soak in bleach and water for a night, then I soak it in prime an water, just like you would purigen. I havent had any problems. Too carry water I have been using a (brand new, deff not used) freon container from walmart. Also old kitty litter jugs. I dont think anything could live through the bleach for a night. I havent had any huge issues with using them. who knows it could come back to get me later on, but if you use bleach that should kill everything inside.

One thing to remember is DI water is stripped of ions so it's aggressive and must be kept tightly covered. That's the reason why food grade palstic is important. If left uncovered or a powerhead is add with a loose cover you will get a reading in a short time from ions the water is drawing from the air. CO2 from a nearby furnace or ammonia from a cat litter box are two biggies.

hmm
Right now i dont use DI water, i dont have a RODI so im stuck lugging jugs to walmart every week to buy RO water. Usually it doesnt stay in the jugs for more than like 3 days, I use a 5gal bucket to mix so what doesnt get used in topoff goes to a 5 gal to sit and mix.

Well, I did soak my container in bleach for a couple days, and i still get higher TDS in the container. However, it's probably due to the fact that I have it open topped. I do have a powerhead in there turning the water over. Is the PH necessary?

Powerhead is totally unrequired.
