Under the Board!

Oh my God, what a mess! There was a small amount of detrius at the edge of the board where it meets the glass and siphoning just wasn't able to get it, soooooo, along came the power head and whammmmmmm, detrius hiding underneath came pouring out!!!! Blowing around the tank!!! Looks like a sand storm!!! There must be more, but how do I deal with this-is there a way? I'm just about ready to start over again without the board so that I can get at this stuff. It's funny, the rock is green, without any detrius in the display, I've been going nuts cleaning the sump, testing top off, display, and sump...the nitrates have been ever so slowly climbing-now I know where from! So does anyone know of any easy way to deal with this, I don't think a daily powerhead around the parameter will be something I'd look forward to, or should I just remove the board.

I was afraid of that! Thanks Casey, I guess better to do it now than have a bigger problem later...My rocks are propped so I guess a glue down is in order also...any other thoughts on what to do as this is the 4th tear down and haven't had a tank in about a year....I'm really bummed, but deep down I know its the right thing to do...

sorry for the double post- but whats the best material to glue the rock together, so that it doesn't topple onto a glass bottom, and should the bottom rock be glued to the glass bottom?

Dont glue the rock to the bottom make pvc stands to sit the rock on and drill the rock and use acrylic rods to connect the rocks together.

If you like the board in there.. and are thinking of starting over anyway.. just run silicone along the board and glass to fill the gap ....done.. no more trap.

If you glue it down the silicone will not hold to it for long. I really do not think that a little ditritus under the board will be a problem down the road. The rocks should break down the waste just like sand would do. Also remember bristle worms will in time get under the board and and take care of any waste. copapods will also do the trick in time. I have some detritus under my board and I could care less about it.

I'm with trueblack on this one. Your nitrates are likely high, and your rocks are likely green because your rocks are shedding and cleaning up.

Detritus under the board was a big question over at RC when the BB change over was going on, basically the conclusion was that the small amount under your board pails in comparison to the massive amount of detritus that used to be in your sand bed.

If your tank is acrylic you shouldn't have to worry about rocks falling. pull the board... if it is glass just use the acrylic rod and secure the rocks to each other

Well, I've pulled the board out! And for me it was the correct thing to do. Underneath was calcified detrius...which will take some time to scrape up. The board itself had algae growing on the underside, along with brown stain (what the brown was, I don't know-some kind of nasty algae I'm sure). So I learned to cut board and pull it up, no biggy...at least now I'll know where the detrius goes - SKIMMER! The rock is back in a garbage pail again-being that it was just cooked, it really shouldn't take to much time to get rid of the green stuff, the underside was clean as could be with some coralline coloring, and the first swish didn't give any junk...this time its just gotta work! Thanks all for the replys!
