Sumpless

Most BB tanks these days seem to have large skimmers in a sump. If a proper surface skimmer was employed, what do ya'll think of a sumpless system with a hang on the back skimmer and closed loop for flow?

I'm thinking of starting a new sumpless 40G Breeder.

I have not seen a HOB skimmer that can handle the job.

Although more expensive than a sump and a in sump skimmer. This should do the job.

Remember you have to take out what you put in so even a cpr skimmer would work if you only have a couple damsels.

right before i took the system down for Ireland this is how it was running. my "sump" was just a 2' length of 4" PVC pipe to hold the heater. i had an overflow that fed the skimmer pump. the skimmer than drained into the mentioned heater area then dumped back into the display.

BTW-this was on a 125g tank.

this is why it was the mantled monster. all of the equipment was located behind the tank up on a mantle.

I hate most fish and wasn't planning on more than two in this tank anyway.

I kind of have a similar setup only in a 20gal, no sump and a close loop. I just have to do a WC every 7 days.

After my upcoming move, I was thinking of something similar. I,m looking at the Deltec MCE600. I suppose one could make an overflow box for it, to surface skim, but I think its not neccessary.

My major concern is a decent top off system for a sumpless tank. Looking at several different ones.

With the tapered neck those skimmer's seem to be disigned to make dry foam.

Reef Daddy, have you used this skimmer for a BB setup ?
