Skimmer air filter

This is a cheesy drawing I made to answer a PM but I thought you might get some use out of it too.

I got this idea from Spanky originally, GregT, and NoSchwag also built one for their Beckett skimmers, but I have found they also work well on needle-wheel skimmers and venturi skimmers.

This is built out of a large container of carbon it measures about 6 inches long, and 4 inch diameter. The back of the container is drilled and a bulkhead inserted to run to the air input of the skimmer, and the lid has a whole bunch of 1/4 inch holes drilled in it. Against the bulkhead there is a layer of loose filter floss, then a bunch of black diamond carbon, then against the lid another packing of loose filter floss.

This acts a filter for removing dust, smoke, air perfumes, etc, from the air before it enters your skimmer, with the amount of air that gets pulled in there it only makes sense to filter it. It also works as a great muffler for Beckett skimmers.

Very nice, mine sounds like a 747 without that!

I should add that you don't want to hang this right off the air valve, you want to run rubber line to this filter. I used 1/2" ID rubber line for mine, I don't want any restriction.

Mine too ReefDaddy
