Should I grow stuff on my bb starboard?
Hey Guys
What do you think, yes or no on growing GSP or zoos or any other plating type coral on the bottom?
On one hand I worry about detritus getting stuck if these corals are growing on the bottom which would prevent the purpose of having the bare bottom.
On the other hand its going to look pretty **** sweet if the starboard bottom is not white and instead filled with coral.
So wondering what you guys think?
I will have 2 spray bars fed by OM4way and DART and 3x6100 tunzes blowing across the bottom...

Sounds good to me, i have been doing this to my tank for about a month now. It takes time for them to grow and what not.
I wouldnt worry to much about the corals trapping the stuff in them. Because corals retract at night so in a BB tank there is good flow so nothing will settle and what does you can siphon out.
But i have been working on this in my tank for about a month now with that look of shrooms, GSP, and a frag of my tree coral.

I say yes to everything but GSP. That stuff is a weed and you dont ever want it to get in your rocks somehow.
The rock i am cooking right now that is going in my bb 90 had several square feet fo the crap in it if i added it all up and i have lost stonies to it because i wastn paying close enough attention and it suffocated a few nice sps frags. Ive went through an entire pint of kalk making sure it wont come back......i still find some of it that survived every time i swish.
Just my opinion of course

i understand... but most of my stuff will be sort of like yours... up off the bottom...you think it could grow up fiberglass rods that are hidden under rocks so no light is present? That would seem to defy logic, but I guess it is possible... I dont plan on having hardly any rock if any touch the bottom of my tank.
Anyways, if not GSP.... can anyone here recommend something they think would look sweet?
Superman encrusting montis maybe (would they grow on starboard?)
I am sure I can do all sorts of zoos.... what about Acans?

I did that with zoas and all it became was a detritus sink on the starboard. Constantly had to blow it out as all the detritus got caught between the zoas. I thought it looked cool but would never do it again.

hmm...that is what I was afraid of...
how much flow did you have across the bottom? I will have 2 spray bars pushing 1800 gals roughly each... and the 3 x 6100s ........

That was in my 75 gallon that had two 6100's for flow. Detritus still built up in between the zoas like mad. I allways thought it would be cool to have a carpet of zoas or GSP's but after experiencing it first hand I will never do it again. I suppose you could blast them with flow but than they would stay closed up all the time defeating the purpose of them looking great.

well....I guess zoas are out.... what about something more lower profile, like an encrusting montipora or other encrusting sps? Wouldnt that have less chance to trap detritus....and they would love the heavy flow....

Encrusting Montipora is a good option... But it won't grow that fast to cover the starboard (maybe in ten years )
btw, don't you like the coraline algae on your starboard Maybe that's a (boring) option?

yah, I am sure the coralline will look ok....just figure getting some cool monti's might work... maybe if I put several of them on the ground, it will speed up the process.... heck even if it doesnt grow to cover the entire bottom, even patches of it should look nice.

Somewhere, I think it was in the BB picture of your tank thread, someone had a tank that had shrooms covering the bottom...it was pretty awesome looking, the tank was established for many years though. I think you should go for it, if it's not gonna take, you'll know right away and if it does and you don't like it you could scrape it up.
