Question about cooking brand new rock for a new tank

I'm about to set up a brand new tank, and I will definitely be going BB. My question relates to getting live rock. I will be purchasing new live rock, and I was wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are of "cooking" new rock that's never been in a tank before.

If it is advisable to always cook your rock, even if it is brand new, then can anyone suggest a place where I might be able to purchase rock with really good shapes, but maybe not overpay for all of the extra life that will die off during the cooking process anyway? I was looking at the marshall rock from Premium Aquatics, but that's awfully expensive rock to just end up cooking it. I can find lots of places that have rock with less life on it, but the shapes are all round and boulder-like. I'm looking for nice, open rock and I can't seem to find any that doesn't include what seems like a price premium for all of the "extra" life on the rock.

Thanks,
Brad

Welcome to TRT Brad!

This is the official guide to cooking your rock:
http://thereeftank.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66551

The advantage to cooking your rock is listed in that article, and if I were you I would definitely cook it. I would not worry about all your life dying either, provided you do it right, the photosynthetic life (Coraline etc,..) will come back, and pods/featherdusters/any filter feeders will do really well even during the cooking process. Mine multiplied like crazy!

Sorry, I don't know any good places to buy rock off hand (I like to get it at an LFS so I can see what I buy), but we have some great sponsors here, you might want to look through them.

HTH,
Whiskey

Welcome to the reef tank!

I have been to Premium Aquatics in Indianapolis and their LR setups are nice, don't know the prices but it may be worth searching.

Marshall rock is costly, but each is piece is larger than Fiji rock when compared by weight.
