Plain BB or raised rock on eggcrate

Rock has been cooking for over 7 months now and tank is almost plumbed up and ready. Just want to know if I should just place my rock on the bottom (without starboard, tank is acrylic) or build these small little shelves like some people do with eggcrate?

what do you do and why?

thanks

I've got my LR on eggcrate, since I couldn't get the LR to stack in an optimal way that would allow for proper flow below.

I think it is essential that you create PVC or eggcrate shelves for your rocks. Placing them directly on the bottom will create problems with settling detritus that is hard to remove.

ezhoops,
After I get back from my cruise in a couple of weeks, I will be putting my rock back in my acrylic tank. I cut a number of different sized pvc pieces to place my rock on. I want my flow to keep the detritus in the water column and by placing the rock on the pvc, my flow should keep the bottom relitively detritus free.

I drilled holes in the bottom of my LR and took cut up plastic coat hanger, put super glue on it and jammed it in the hole. I used 3 of these feet per rock to keep it off the bottom, this aloud flow underneeth with very little visable ubstruction, plus it makes the bottom rocks more stable.

"Dear.... I can't seem to find my coat hangers, have you seen them?"

My wife asks me this at least once a day, with "coat hangers" being interchangable with any other object that is not bolted down

Here is one of the many rock racks in my aqua scape:

Here you can see the same rack placed in the tank with a lower rack in front of it and a higher one behind it:

Here you can see it dressed up with rocks. Note the yellow stags on the flat rock with the orange anthias in front of it in the pic above, below it's replaced by a green table placed directly onto the rack with no rock below it.

Here you can see how a Tunze Stream is placed below the middle rack seen in the 1st picture, the lower rack in front is placed so there is enough space for me retrieve the Stream for cleaning simply by pulling the outside magnet to the front, which is a long overdue chore as seen in the pic

sorry, no full tank shots yet as it's still a work in progress

Ahhh, see there is the problem, you need to buy a wrench, the best stuff IS bolted down

it all depends on how far ahead you can think. i am doing an FSB using the epoxy and Southdown sand. instead of just pouring the composit into the tank i planned the LR exactly. i am embedding the LR into the FSB so that it will be rock solid.

here is a thread showing my progress.
