Rob exactly what equipment do you have?
It honestly sounds like you're not processing enough water through the skimmer and/or your skimmer is not taking care of it.
What do you have for a clean up crew?

That really means nothing.
How fast are you getting the water to the skimmer?
Is the skimmer taking it out? draining fast enough?

Rob it is easy to say I do everything right but that doesn't mean much unless you really understand what is going on. Break down every single detail of your tank, what you do & when (on new thread) everything you clean & do daily! Something isn't right as mentioned! Maybe a sb is easier for you, maybe you will succeed but for how long I would think that would be the question, when a sb goes, it goes fast!
oops seems like I post way too slow LOL! man you guys are moving fast!

What ever the head loss of the mag12 to the top of the tank 5 ft.
What goes up comes down.
Skimmer pulls out green water.

If your skimmer is that wet & pulling out green water then you need it to skim more!

No you just need to keep up with your tank, when you clean that tank your skimmer shouldn't have so much afterwords it can't slow down on the wet green stuff. This sound like you have a lot of nutrients needed to be removed on a regular basis. How much rock blowing & siphoning are you doing, do you use a Micron sock when cleaning? BB tanks should be sparkely! I'm guessing you have a large bio-load for a small tank? Consider reducing it some before jumping out! Just trying to help man!

I think less less less. Just start out right.
You should know the head loss and what your turnover is through your skimmer.
You might be pulling out enough, but green water is phyto, and phyto feeds off of phosphate in the water column. Phosphate does not get into the water column unless it's leaking from the substrate/rocks.

what size is the drain on your overflow?
i have a Mag 12 on my DIY eductor driven skimmer. it is not even pushing 400gph through it. i am betting you are in the same boat. i plan on upping my eductor to a 1/2" eductor. this should increase my processing to about 800gph i hope.
i next need to figure out how to get more water to the tank. my 1.5" overflow is not moveing anything near the 1200gph it is supose to.
