I think that with proper tank set up and good hsubandry sandbeds can last way longer than many people think,....but even then........at some point it is inevitable it will reach its limit. You have a sandbed much older than my reefing experience in the first place, so you obviously have it under control.
My last tank with sand was set up very well and I think that sandbed would have lasted as long as any. That isnt why I took it out. there are several other very key reasons why I will never have another tank with sand. As well, the sand was not in any part to blame for any of the issues I had in this thread if thats what you might have somehow gathered.

Bill, I have a question about the yellow coris wrasse. I have monti nudi's and heard the yellow coris might eat them. Also, I've read that they need a sand bed to hide and sleep. My tank is also bb, so should the yellow coris be OK? Is yours doing OK?

both of my tanks are BB and both have a thriving yellow coris in them. The one that had been in the tank with sand I did almost lose though int he transition as he was so used to sleeping in the sand, he wouldnt sleep for the first few nights and was exhausted......he kept getting stuck to my intakes which are designed to not be able to hold against their will any healthy fish. .I had to turn off my CLS for a few days to let him adjust, and all is well. I have very few hiding p[laces in my rockwork so that wasnt helping his cause. you will be fine, just make sure the first few nights you have him that he finds relief until he figures out he doesnt get any sand.
I almost lost my leopard too int he change. I wasnt successful at getting him to just deal with it. I had to remove him and give him to a friend as I dont think he would ever sleep without the sand. I was told that, but thught I could prove the theory wrong. I didnt. lol
as far as the nudis, the yellows are the most diligent pickers you will ever find and can help keep them at bay, but wherever they cannot fit their nose the nudis will thrive and they are not a solution, nor even a acceptable bandaid to me. You need to erradicate them and there isnt any fish that can erradicate them completely
here is soem reading on somethign that CAN

Bill, Thanks for sharing the info on the wrasse's. I know fish will probably not eradicate the nudi's, bu I'm hoping they might help. Most of the monti's I can't get out of the tank, and even if I could I don't have a QT to put them in for treatment. I don't reallly have the time or $'s to set up a new tank anyway for QT, so I'll eventually end up w/o monti's, I just won't be able to have any in my tank (a bummer since they are my favorite corals). However, I'll let you know how the wrasses do in keeping this at bay.

good luck
When I had them I never did end up truly erradicating them until I killed all of my sps in a accident. I didnt know about the potassium treatment then.
I would suggest a couple things that may help.
1. all of the pieces you really like, break off a good sized frag far from the damage with no eggs and give it to a experienced reefer that you know, even if you have to ship them. Then if the time comes that you do indeed lose the battle, they can give you a piece back so you have it. make sure they know how to ensure that tehy dont get infected as well
2. break off the montis where you can so there are no unexposed pieces where they like to lay eggs. Cover up any spots that are dead that may have eggs with glue and siphon them out when you see the nudis. these things will greatly prolong how long you can survive with them and soem people using methods like this along with wrasses are living with the nudis and not losing the battle entirely

Hey, thanks for the info on the yellow coris. I was going to search for that info today. I have one in my current tank with sand, but the 75g will be BB and I thought I might have to get rid of him. Now I have hope. Another option I did hear of however for them was to take a tupperware container or similar and put sand in it. That way you have a sand bed for him to sleep in until he gets adjusted. Then slowly move the sand out or it can stay in and be changed easily.

ya...I thought about doing the tupperware thing in order to keep my leopard. But I really didnt want to have to look at or deal with it, so I gave the fish away. If you have rocks sitting directly ont he floor the yellow will seriously be fine. I only mentioned two here, but I have had two others in BB systems as well and they were all fine. I lost one to a overheating accident and the other carpet surfed one night. Like I said, just make sure he does in fact find relief if you are like me and have tons fo flow ripping across the floor and very little rock

updates?? not really The tanks are running as they should be and I have no complaints.
I really want to get around to taking some pics of the big tank and my rockwork. Sometime soon I will get some up.
Where i have moved I am on a failry slow 3g connection and my past days of being a picture ***** are over as it now takes effort and time to post pics.
