Super newb question but I want to ask about the carbon. I am setting up three tanks for propagation and was only going to have a sump with macro algae, dsb, lr, poly filter and bio balls. The pictures are inspiring....know it may be a slow road to success but any and all advice appreciated!!!!

Not sure what your questin is.......as far as m,y carbon statement.......I think I should have ran it as it was VERY tight quarters with all of those sps in the temp orary frag tank. There was surely some allelopathic responses going on and runnign carbon wopuld have helped clean the water
I run carbon as standard pracitice only a day or two every couple of months
As far as your prop tank idea........I think you are makign it way too complicated. Live rock and a skimmer is the only equipment you need in there. I would question why you want macro algae, lr, poly filter and bio balls in the system in the first place

Thanks Whiskey
I truly think that the corals were just moved way too much through this.
Of the larger than frag sized corals that started to STN...I did frag soem of them up to savve what I could.........every single one of these I pulled out and cut up were total losses....none of the frags made it
Some of them that were stn'ing I let be. Without exception the STN stopped and they are now growing back over what died.
I should have left them all be even though they were STN'ing and I would have lost less.......
Regardless...everything is now on the right track so all is good.

I've never had a coral stop STNing once it started. Glad to hear you had a bit of a different experience.

I have, quite a few times actually. It depends on what caused it to start slowly dying.
Look at what I found this morning.......it might not look like much, but this coral was way dead, or so I thought 2 weeks ago.
thsi is my hawkins and one of the losses that bothered me most as it was just getting a little size to it and really starting to grow before the move.........I actually fragged this thing up twice trying to save it.......should have let it be.
anyway.......its GROWING

Very cool! You've got to be back on the right track if things are turning around like that
I too have had corals make a turn around in the past, start to STN, then stop - In fact I'm hoping every coral in my tank will soon do exactly that

Maybe the reason we are so experienced in the necrosis department is that between the two of us, we have collectively tortured and killed way more than our share of corals??
Just a thought. Chris hasnt had that problem

Could be!
But in our defense it was never on purpose.

if it's 15 years old and hasnt been a problem yet, why worry now? do you have any signs of stress in the tank, or are you just searching for worries?

with a 15 year old sand bed, it seems you have a good understanding of what it takes to balance nutrient import/export. That's the main reason most folks have sand bed "crashes"... they've had years of poor husbandry, dead zones of collected detritus, and other facets of their tank that did not serve them well.
