How many of you run filter socks?

I've been running them for about 1 month, and change them daily. I use the 100 micron. The biggest reason is I've got a snail breeding problem and they keep jamming up my beckett. Due to the design of my sump I can't get a really good screen on the intake, only one of the 2" cheesy ones. I am thinking skimming wet is not really doing much good since the filter sock is picking up all the particles. Do you run them?

Yep.

Washed out in RO/DI water once or twice a day and replaced with new ones about once a week.

I use them mostly for microbubble control, but they are good at removing particulates, also.

I have never used one. I am heavily concidering putting one on my out flow from my skimmer. I get very little detritus in that part of the sump but I am very lazy and would rather not have to vacuum it up. The other side of the sump is very easy to clean... I just put a mag 12 in it and blow it all over for a little while and my skimmer takes it out.

Another plan I was having was to place a DSB in the sump to help out with it. I could just change it out every few years.

I ran them on all of my tanks up until 3 months ago. Stopped and dont miss them even a little bit. There was zero gain using them now that i dont use them I realize, for me anyway. However, i DO use them if i happen to see a pile of detritus i want to quickly siphon out back into the sump, as well as would progbably use them with a snail issue such as you describe.

What kind of snails you got?

Skimming wet is still a good idea, I would not stop doing that.

Reef-daddy, Can you fit a spa intake cover over your intake??? I LOVE them and use them everywhere. They are super low profile and unobtrusive.

I have a local spa place order them for me...........

i just did a google though and came up with this place which has lots of options it looks like......

http://discountspaparts.com/asccusto...91&navParent=0

i didnt notice any 2" however...........the 1 1/2 inch may work if you simply put a 1 1/2" -2" threaded adapter on it........you may have to cut some of the adapter off to make it sit flush depending on the type of bulkhead you have or however it is you are using it......

These things are sweet, especially for cls intakes that are in the tank......they only stick out 1/2" or so and can handle 4800 gph apiece.

i use them and would not do it any other way ! the way i look at it is they serve several purposes . as weatherman noted great for bubble control , great at catching large particles including uneaten food . the subject of socks gets tossed around quite often . some prefer to let the skimmer get it out but i don't think most have it set up right to do this and end up with alot of junk just sitting in their sump and rotting anyways . if your to lazy to clean the socks then your probally to lazy to siphon out the sump , so whats the differance .

I run them on the overflow pipe before my skimmer, i have 2 100 micron bags swapping/changing out every week. I wash them with bleach in the washing machine. Run 2 rinses cycle, wash each twice and they come out like new. They are very helpful with micro-bubbles and detris in the sump and occasonally catching a peppermint shrimp every now and then.

Would not go without them with my setup!

I dont run socks nor siphon my sump...dont need to....regardless i do have a pretty good idea from when i used to use filter socks.

I just would install a plastic zipper in them. Then when its time to clean them, just open them up, lay them on the concrete and hose them out. good as new in less than a minute. I remember very vividly wrestling with those things to get them good as new clean. ; )

I use them just because they do catch crud, and they stop microbubbles. Most importantly, I like that they keep my sump from collecting detritus, since it is nearly impossible to clean my sump. I change them out about twice a week. I toss them in the washing machine and they come out like new.
