Real nice apparatus for the socks, Michael. Did you DIY this?

The sump was built for me by Barr Aquatics and, yes, the tray DOES slide out. The thought behind this particular design was to deal with the very high flow without the resultant microbubble issues. It works pretty well in that regard but it doesn't take long (a couple days, actually) for the socks to get 'full'.

Just love the looks of the clean sump! Wish, that mine was like this...

I can't get a really good screen on the intake, only one of the 2" cheesy ones. I am thinking skimming wet is not really doing much good since the filter sock is picking up all the particles.
|
There are micron filter bags, Current USA brand, 800 and 250 micron, different sizes, not expensive, shipping above $35 is free - can be used for prefiltering, just as micron socks - only for a larger particles.
BTW, I making own micron bags from the Coralife micron pads, 100 mk, 50 mk and less. With sewing machine it could be done faster and better looking.
Have the big messy eaters in the tank, using micron socks helped very much. Change daily, hand prewash, 2 x weekly wash with the bleach. Some are half year old, still useable.
In the Calfo's thread about making skimmer be efficient, is mentioned, that the skimmer should receive the dirtiest water possible, and the skimmed water should not mix with the incoming water. This is impossible without gate valve modification. I could only wish, that the manufacturers, who are making $250 skimmers, made the skimmers, that are not require immediate improvement for the barely basic work. Re-phrasing popular saying, whatever you pay - you'll get the same .... .
Tried to run tank for a 3 weeks without the micron sock - much worse, including the fish's reaction.

I am sad to say that I have been using a filter sock for the past 24 hours. I know of no other way to keep these little snails from clogging my becket.
Any other suggestions?

I don't, but when I redo my tank (when I move, no idea when that will be) I will be redoing the sump and probably using filter socks then.

I'm planning to plumb the overflow drain directly into the skimmer.

Yes, changed every two-three days when I empty/clean my skimmer, but would like to get rid of it. I can go a week without having to empty/clean the skimmer but I do it sooner due to the need for changing the filter sock. I guess I would like some moral support in making that decision (beyond the results of this poll).

Get rid of the stupid, dirty, crap collecting, unecessary sock that makes more work for you. Just do it.
Was that what you were looking for??
