believe it or not, shipping costs are high and these items are NOT tiny.. most guys run filter socks that are 16in long...I know I do... so they need a big box, though I suppose you could fold them. I guess they could be shipped USPS in a large envelope without insurance and then whatever you get it would be on you, but I know most of my suppliers hate shipping with USPS.
I use a filter sock, and as long you keep changing it out and cleaning, it is great for same purpose already stated.

it IS $7 shipping, but it doesnt increase no matter how many you buy...as well shippingis free for orders over $175 if youve got other dry good needs.

it is absurd you have to pay even $7 to ship such an item. It really isnt about size, but more about weight, and filter socks weigh next to nothing.
I'd bet I can fit one into a large envelope and send it USPS for like $2 or 3 without insurance or delivery confirmation.
Anyways, most online companies have their standard shipping method.
Compared to what you would pay for the items at your LFS AND have to pay sales tax, shipping should be the least of your concerns.
Now, back to filter socks...I love mine still...and I am going to be doing my first washing machine load with them... for those who use bleach, you dont notice any wear or tear if you continue to wash the filter socks? I mean, how would you know if your 100micron isnt deteriorating and becoming 150 or 200 or more?
Just a thought.

I use the HOT magnum HOB and change the pad regularly. I run a carbon/phosban combination in there. It's been working for me.

I wash mine in the washer when they're really stained, with a little bleach, couple of rinse cycles and they're as good as new...I let them air dry, I have 8, one for each day of the week and an extra in case I'm lazy and haven't clean them and they are still soaking in a bucket. Haven't really noticed any breakdown in the material-going on 6 mos., but then again, not using the same one daily...

I run them and change out 2-3 times per week. My H&S skimmer is fed directly from a drain line. I wash them with oxy bleach, let them dry for a week or so and they are good to go.

I've quit running the sock. Less maintenance to deal with.

I use FOUR of 'em! Four 100 micron socks that I change out every other day. I clean them by machine washing with a little bleach then rinsing and air drying.
