half BB questions

Thinkin about goin half BB on my ten im settin up. . . Sand in the front with rocks lifted up and a spray bar on the back. Was wondering if cooked rock is essential or can i just get some out of another tank and have at it. Also will the sandbed in front take away any of the advantages to having a BB tank?

Cooking rock not essential but more beneficial...I never did though!

The main advantage of a BB is nothing to get trapped anywhere, can go crazy flow and need not worry about moving sand particles and very easy detrital removal.. I you don't mind the look ....go BB as this isn't a true BB

I went this route as I wanted the sand bottom look, but liked the BB concept!.

You are going to get a million views on substrate bottoms, yet since your in th BB forum...BB will be the main opinion!...you just need to figure out what is best for you.

there is DSB(6"), NSB(3-4"), SSB(.5"-1.5") and then this the SSB in front only! (TIM & 110galreef patent)

All have advantages and disadvantages. But this idea seems as close to BB with the look of sand. Thus why I went this route.

What are you trying to accomplish???

You can do that, but won't really have a BB tank.

I like the look of sand in the front but in the back all it does is pick up waste and become nasty...Thus i wanted to have a spraybar under the rocks to push the Det twords the front for easy cleanup. Does a fake sandbed like geoff did a while back count as a BB.

I think if You have any sand that collect waste then it is not really a bb, I think he used epoxy or something with it and that will keep it from acting like a sandbed and holding all the waste in it. I would have to go back and look at what he did again, I am on expert. JMO

I think he is refering to the one where Geoff took starboard (cutting boards) and then PVC glued (or something) sand into it!

Thus the sand is fixed and still nothing to get trapped anywhere!

Yes as long as it can't absorb it and release it back , Even the idea of BB under the rock and sand in front is better to me then having rock sitting on sanbed and behind it. I think when it all comes down to it You have to do waht appeals to you.
I almost put sand in my reef tank when I went BB, It took awhile for it to grow on me, I like the look now.

Steve syphons out his SB periodically and replaces with new sand, not to mention that the sheer size and equipment it has makes any comparison really unfitting.
