here is a-little experiment i decided too try , even with the disapproval from spanks ! but we know he doesn't read this forum often , so i should be safe !!! . i decided that the best part of live rock was is ability to de - nitrify , but that comes with a cost . there are many other organisms wanted or un-wanted that lives on it also , so while this idea is nothing new i thought i would give it a try . how about a bacteria rock ! so what i did was buy some of the ceramic bio-media put it in a large opening mesh bag and woo-la bacteria rock . now one thing that spanks convayed is the problem of loading , but since i use filter socks i don't feel that this will be a problem . we will see !

not really , but at the same time it won't hurt to have it go lower ! even with all the live rock it came in at around 5 p.p.m. , so now that it has dropped back down i feel better about the transition .

But your ceramic bio rings are not going to denitrify, they are in an arobic envryoment.
Did I miss something?

Gwaco, I don't get what your doing. Are you placing the ceramic media in the sump? Isn't it going to do the same thing as the rock?

in a nut shell yes ,its just something i wanted to experiment with . my mind says think of l.r. without all the added bio load , just bacteria . don't know if it will work , but what the hey ! i'm just trying to eliminate as many potential leaching areas as possible . my ideas have been termed " store display look " !

Here's what I would guess would happen.
Initially as bacteria colonize the rings you would have a net reduction in N compounds (ammonium) and P compounds (ortho phosphates). Then when they have no where else to go with it, they will leak.
Also the rings in the sump will act like rock, filter fluff, GAC, etc in the sump - a mechanical filter. Which will load the rings and make them a detritus trap.
not good.
