effect of moving from sand to BB

Right now i have a 55 gallon setup with a medium sand bed and LR. I'm moving the tank this week, what would be the effect if i set up an old 55 gallon tank that i had in the garage, and moved all the current substances in my tank (rock, Fish, Water) but not the sand to the other tank, would it cycle?

It can be rebuilt.

any tank that is moved will cycle. no matter how carefull you are, you will kill some critters in/on the LR. you can limit the cycle by making sure the LR stays in its current orientation after the move. as in the LR has a top and a bottom. the top has the algae, and the bottoms have the sponges. keep them in this orientation and you will have as minimal a cycle as possible.

if your LR was touching the sand then the switch will be easy and gradual. the LR will be full of phosphates from the wicking up from the sand so it will take several months for the bacterial turgur to remove it. this will get you used to not having to dose as much/or at all. it will also give you a chance to get used to the way the tank acts as a BB tank.

if you had your LR suspended above the sand then the swith to a BB will be pretty abrupt. you will need to be very carefull with your dosing. you may be better off not dosing at all for a month or two to see how the levels behave. i have found that all i need to do is top off with kalk water and do 10g water changes a week to keep my tank growing. you may also.

you will also find that you do not need to keep your levels near as high as you did with a sand bed. i would tell you what my levels are, but i have not tested them in at least 2 months.
