I could be wrong but I believe the idea behind the vinegar/acid bath is going to be to remove the outer layer of the rock and thus take the "bad stuff" with it since it won't have anything left to attach to. I simply can't figure out any other way that it would work.

I get the concept now that I have read about it. And I didn't mean to imply that the only reason for the acid bath was to "open up pour structure". But if you are disolving the surface of the rock you are going to be makeing all of those itty bitty holes just an itty bitty bit bigger.

i was just browsing and came accross this and figured id throw in my two cents worth. i dont see how giving the rock a bath whether it be vinegar or acid is going to draw nutrients from it. i can see how it would clean off the outer surface but as far as absorbing the nutrients out of the rock, someone will have to explain that one. the concept of cooking to allow the bacteria to eat the nutrients is sensible. i think this will continue to be a debated topic because i dont beleive any of us have the capability to measure the nutrient content of the rock. but i can be wrong. but it deffinitely sparked my interest an will be on the top of my list of things to research.

If they can figure out how many calories a tblspn of oatmeal has they can figure out the nutrrient content of LR. Of course not many people have access or the means to pay for a GC/MS and the other goodies required.

I hear a lot of the inmates at the jail talking about cooking rocks I could ask them for help.

Wait, I think maybe they are talking about something different

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

You have a reef tank in jail... what the hey!!!!!! leme gues... yo favorite fish is a clownfish cuz you dig the stripes?!?!?!

On a more serious note. I just ordered a 80# batch of dry base rock. I plan on doing the acid bath thingy. Then let the rock soak in distilled H20 for a few weeks changed every 3 or so days. Then whip up a batch of SW and seed the rock with a few doses of Prodibio for a couple weeks. What would be the best way to feed the growing bacteria population without starting to load the rock with excess nutrients. I will be doing this in a lightless situation to keep algae at bay until the rock is in the system.
