Cooking my rock: Special Cool Down Cycle
For about 6 weeks now, I've had all my rock sitting in a 60gal trash can in the garage with a mag 5 with a Kent venturi aerator and a heater. This weekend, I was planning to change the water, so I removed the heater and made a few other preparations, got sidetracked and didn't get back until today. We've had a bit of a cool spell here in Atlanta, and I fear that the water temp dipped down into the mid-60 deg range for a couple of days...
Any ideas on the overall impact of this??

I would say the impact is very little, assuming you are still cooking it, if the rock were to go right in the tank at this point I might worry, but I think the bacteria will rebuild very fast.

I plan on cooking it for at least a few more weeks, and then moving it slowly back into the display system (filling the sump with the uglier pieces first). I happen to have a few rocks still in my sump now, so I'll probably toss them in the trash can cooker (now heated) just in case some 'seeding' is needed.

Good idea, that will help your cultures build back up faster.

You can cook rock outside. Just make sure you use a heater to maintain the temperature. As long as the container stays closed, the smell isn't really that bad. When it comes time to do anything with the containers, simply open the garage doors, put a fan blowing across the containers out the door to ventilate the smell outside, then invest in some air freshener.

Mine only smelled for the first week and it really wasn't that noticeable at all in the garage...

Better the garage than the house.
