Can you cook rock that has things on it that you want?
Can you cook rock that has things you like on it ... like shrooms, anenomes etc?
I had tons of hair algae ... then my tank leaked ... i threw out my substrait ... now my reef is in a bucket downstairs ... a lot of the hair has died off ... some has grown new ...

good question... tagging along...
I am failry certain the answer is yes you can cook it with light but it will take longer to do so.
and if you want the aneemonee to live... you can't cook it in the dark.

i wouldn't bother cooking it then. just set it up in a BB tank and suck the crap out 2-3 times a week and do weekly large water changes. it will take longer but it can be done.

agreed, same basic theory but you'll have to have light to sustain the corals or other inverts on the rock.

To really cook it you want it in the dark. the point is to turn a algael driven system into a bacterial driven system and giving it light defeats this purpose to some extent and you will never get it done as well as if you were to shut out ALL light and just cook it in a tub in the dark
remove the critters you want to keep and cook it. even if that means chipping the rock out from underneath them
non photosynthetic creatures can survive the process just fine, as can stuff you hate like aiptasia and GSP

To directly answer your question it depends on the organism. I cooked mine and the hairy mushrooms and polyps survived even though I intentionally tried to irradicate them. Most other stuff would most certainly not survive.

If your trying to keep 'shrooms & zoo's from dying off don't even be concerned. I've had zoos that were still alive over a year in the dark. They must go into some type of hybernation. They'll shrivel up & get smalller but won't completely die off.

I've heard that 6 months is a nice round number, depending on how much rock there is.

I wouldnt say it wouldnt work as well, it's just going to take longer and will require more diligence. Plenty of people have recovered from serious algae probelms without cooking the rock.
