you can have huge amounts of flow if the tank is BB.
you are not feeding a huge bacterial mass known as the sand bed.
things can be corrected very quickly without sand. 100% water changes are possible.
less light needed.
less supplimentation needed.

I didnt know there was any

Other than you have the look of a BB tank not the pretty sand.

Like Geof said they are just easier to keep clean. They dont require as much work IMO as a sand bottom tank

Negatives are that quite a few fish are not an option.

I thought you could have MORE fish with BB? The extra flow and strong skimming allows for heavier feeding but also more efficient removal of wastes. Wasn't there a thread about how bleached corals looked in a BB tank if you don't feed the tank enough?

I'm confused, what types can't you keep? I'm planning on clownfish, tang, anthelias, etc for my 90 gal bb tank. Are they OK? Are you just pulling my leg?

For instance.....MANY sand sifting gobies and the like are out. Anything that relies solely on live pods or sand for food is generally out. Many wrasses are out. Most all cirrhilabrus(sp) are fine. Thats just to name a few. There are many more. There are a lot of exceptions and success cases even within what i described of course, but extra coinsiderations need taken into account for many types of fish if you choose not to have a substrate.
