BB Aquapod... is it possible?
Hey BB buddies! I'm going to be setting up a 24g Aquapod with the pc's. I won't be running a skimmer and will instead be doing 3 gallon water changes every week. I only plan on putting a few zoo's, some soft corals and maybe a frogspawn. My question is will I be asking for trouble if I don't use some sand? I just love the clean look of my BB reef and would like to do in the nano if possible. Would love to get everyone's opinion and thoughts, thanks!

Thanks! I'm a bit confused by your answer though...
I know a BB tank can be done, I'm just wondering if I can do it in a low flow unskimmed setting? =)

I would tend to think no,... The skimmer is esential to remove waist becuse you don't have a proper sponge (dsb) to store it. Although you do have a tank with coral that likes some nutreants,.. the water changes may be enough.
Is there anyway you can add a small skimmer? I think it would be a good thing regardless. My 15 gallon nano has a seaclone on it.

Hey Wiskey!
I agree with everything you said, but thought I would get some opinions anyways. I'm looking to keep this as low tech as possible. It's basically just a night light(excuse I gave the wife to buy it) for the kid. I may try it out anyways, and add sand later if I have to.
BTW, Bomber ever post here anymore? I see he still mod's one forum??

No, but we all hope he will make a return at one point.
Are you going to have any fish in this tank? If no fish then there is no problem with having no skimmer.
Glad to see you over here,
Whiskey

If I did put any it would most likely be my African Blueline Clownfish and that's it. Like I said, I'm going to give it a try and see what happends. I hate substrate! =)
I've visited here quite a bit since I joined, just haven't posted.
I sure do miss that old man's humor!

I see no reason You can't. I have one of my tanks with a sand bed , all others are BB, some with skimmers and some without, Do your water changes and siphon the bottom of the tank at that time.

I have a 6 gallon Eclipse that is BB. I've done everything wrong with it, kept the bio-wheel, still have only the 8 watt lighting, very low flow, ect., and it has been great for over 2 years. I have 9 lbs live rock, 2 fish, false perc and chalk bass, and green mushrooms, blue mushrooms, yellows polyps, snails, pep shrimp, no problems. All but the chalk bass have been in the tank 2+ yrs, the bass has been over 1 yr. I don't know any reason why it wouldn't work fine - the aquapod has much better lighting than the Eclipse, too.

Yes you can. I ran my 20gal for over six months with out a skimmer, I just put one on it but I do not like the big powerhead in my little tank. and for a good part of the six months I had a HOB filter just for recirculating water, aroung 300gph is I remember right. Now my closed loop gives me at least 400gph. I did a 5gal WC every week.

By the way, I see you live in Cal City, I used to live in Chi town also and was always in the South side, worked by Chicago Hts, and by the River Oak mall. Welcome to TRT.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone! I got the aquapod today and will be filling it up shortly. I just swapped out the stock return pump with a mj1200 and will be using the stock pump to blow behind the rockwork. I'm going to use some Hirocks base rock and seed it with rock from my big tank and some cheato for whatever pods it may have. I will be going BB for sure!
Louie,
I don't live too far from that mall. Ever heard of Pano's? I live a few blocks from there.
