Are Tunze worth it?
I have been wanting a tunze kit: 2x6100 W/ the 7095 multi controler for some time, but it is basically going to cost me about $1,000. Honstally, to me that's allot of money.
I should say I don't want a closed loop.
I want to hear from Tunze owners, do you feel what you got was worth the cash? If you had to do it again, would you still buy the Tunze's? Or would you go with a different option? If so, what would you do insted?
I have had 0 luck finding them used, and don't trust E-bay, so I finally decided that if I am going to get them, I will have to get them new.
Thanks for your help!

I really don't think they are worth it in terms of what you get. Especially when you check out the MJ mod.
I honestly would still buy them tho; since they are really well built and low profile. I plan on 4 6100's for my up and coming 180.
Check out www.reeftanksupply.com; those are the best prices I have seen on them.

Hey Wiskey
I have 3x6100 and 2x6200 on multi controller in my 180...I have had them for only a month but so far, I like them a lot.
How big is your tank? You might like the nano's better..I havent had a chance to see them in my hands yet, but when i get them I'll try and post some pics. The biggest nano I think the 6055, is controllable and will go for around $200... you could get 3 of them on a multi for around $840... and they would put out about the same as 2 of the 6100s but spread out over 3 pumps.
Let me know if you need anymore convincing. There is a reason why they are hard to get and almost always out of stock

Oh, I should have put that in there, my tank is a 125G, 6 foot tank.
Thanks everyone for the replys! I am going to keep an eye on this and see what everyone says before I make any comments.
Thanks,
Whiskey

That is a ton of cash for powerheads. I dunno why you wouldn't just do a CLS for that. Go crazy with it like Fly with an OM on it. It would look better.

I am using a CL as well.... personally, I wish I just had gone with tunzes only. Besides, your tank might not be drilled for a closed loop, and even if it is, you have to spend extra money on plumbing, you have to buy an extra pump to run it (at least a DART which will draw 130-170w) and then you will pay an extra $15-20 per month on electricity. If you have couple of 6000s or 6100s or 3 of the nanos, you are running less wats and save you $10 per month, and you will get WAY more flow than any closed loop could ever give you. Unless you use eductors or penductors on the CL, but then you would need a pressure rated pump.
Ok enough ranting....that is my opinion, I have both, I use both.... I might eventually do away with my CL.. only reason I have it going now is to drive my spray bar at the bottom.

I like Tunze Streams a lot.
I have two 6100s on a multicontroller in my 120.
I have two 6100s on a multicontroller in my 155.
And, I have two 6100s and one 6000 on a multicontroller in my 180.
They may be expensive, but they are simple and very efficient. With multicontrollers, and magnet holders you can be very creative in how you manage your flow.

The good benefit is the wave control, I have been looking at these as well, h20cooled just got one off rc I seen 2 kits with 6100 sell this week there, I also debated it, instead I went with 2 mjmods on a alternating timer. cost about $50 for the whole thing.
Keep in mind I have a CLS already I just wanted more intermittent flow, if I had it to do again without a doubt I would go with a setup identacle to fly guys, oceans motions 8 way with a hurkin pump.

For that kind of money I would prefer to get a wave box; it is IMO closer to the ocean movement.

I got Tunzes also, and I think it was the best money I've spent on the tank. Even without a properly sized skimmer at the time I got them they took care of the small amount of cyno I had growing in the remote corners of my tank. I've never had a CLS, so I can't compare. But I can tell you, you can make waves, you can keep it constant flow, you can make them go on intermittantly, there's all kinds of different ways to program them (those are just a few). What I find as being totally awesome about them is the flow that is put out by them. The amount water that they push is full and wide, not like a power head which is strong and narrow. The flow of that water is soft, not harsh. You can put your hand in front of it and feel its motion without your hand feeling like its being pushed by the water. Somehow, it reaches all around the tank, under and around the rock. I currently have 2 6100's on a 7095 controller. I have two, and eventually will get another two (when I'm done with all my other purchases, and build a little more money-ha, ha) You can also adjust their output from say 0-100%, so if you have one near delicate corals and it can't be placed elsewhere you can turn down its flow. I really don't think I'd be looking forward to another two if they weren't worth it, but that's only my 2 cents. Maybe you could check out someone near by, or a LFS, I've seen them in display tanks. Their one drawback that I could see is that they are noticible, unless you put them behind the rocks. (I've had them on the floor of the tank and they work equally as well there as when they are midway up the tank- that's why I want more .

I think the OM's and the Tunzes both do a great job of creating random flow although i must say the OM's do it better for two reasons, one fucnctional and one aesthetics.
Functional- An OM 8 way give you random variable flow coming from eight different ports in eight different parts of the tank. Thats assuming you dont split any of the ports coming out of the 8 way or more could be achived for not hardly any more money.(good luck fitting that plumbing in though..lol) You would need eight different tunzes in the tank to do this. To be sure, i dont deny that 8 tunzes would do a better job yet, but how much is THAT gonna cost???
Aesthetics- The only plumbing i have to look at in the tank are the omniflex nozzles coming out of the bulkheads. Furthermore i bri9ng my sump return plumbing up and over the top down on the front left and right sides so the outputs are hidden by the canopy. There are ZERO pipes or pumps visible. Just reef.
FWIW, the OM -8 way when all said and done including all plumbing fittings including bulkheads, pipe, fittings, unions and valves AND the pump to power it is gonna cost $1000 as well.
Downside of the OM is it takes more than a little bit of effort plumbing it. : )
