An update.... I know, Shocking!

Business has kept me so busy, I have not been able to share my experience with everyone.

Needless to say, I began my BB adventure no better off than any ssb or dsb or any sb tanks I have had. Same prob as usual, lots of algae, dirty tank, dont matter how much flow I had.

Of course, that was the beginning. It was caused by rock curing, too many fish being added to the system, etc etc.

I am now almost completely finished separating my inventory of fish from my display tank, and will soon be putting corals in place of the fish

Last night, I began part of the aquascaping . I used a 1/4in fiberglass rod, and drilled my rocks with a 1/4in masonry bit that is like 16in long. Fitting the different rocks onto it was like playing tetris but I finally came up with a nice stack...so my very left side of the tank has a beautiful pilar now.

Throuought this week I will continue the aquascaping (who knew it could take this long hahaha), so I hope i can get a full tank shot of it by the weekend.

I still need to fix my **** UV sterilizer (Spanky was right, it somehow has a leak, not sure if its an oring or the actual sleeve is broken, I need to replumb it and add ball valves so next time this happends I can just close the ball valves and isolate the UV unit, bad plumbing on my part this time around

My phosphates are still too high so I'll continue to do 50gal water changes every week until I get them to where they need to be. Most of the problem is I have rocks in my sump. Those will be used for aquascaping and go into the tank, so once they are out of the sump, I can clean up the sump of all the crap that has fallen off the rocks, and sump will be spic and span clean.

I'll try and get some pics up soon.

Gal

Gal don't forget, flow doesn't mean anything if the flow isn't getting it to the skimmer and the skimmer can't handle it.

I'll bet you good money, those rocks in your sump are acting like a mechanical filter and that's where your P is coming from.

Well that didn't work either. LOL
Gal, it's the "this thread is worthless without pictures" one.

He usually brags about all the bandwith from his site, so I figured I might as well add to it.

And it's true, this thread is worthless without pics.

Thanks guys... I appreciate it... and to add to the commotion.. I just got some amazing SPS colonies from Sulawesi, just UNREAL colors...

OH I KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW..

NO PICS = BS!! hahaha

Believe me, if I had time I'd get them up here... I'll try to get some crappy ones up tonight, but I am waiting for my tamron 90mm macro lens to arrive so I can use it with my Nikon D80 DSLR and provide you guys with REAL pics.

Believe me Spanky, I KNOW that my rocks in my sump are a phosphate phactory I just made that one up lol.

I dont have much flow going through the sump, maybe 1000gph, so you have to think eventhough there is 20,000gph flow inside the main display, it isnt doing crap about the rocks in the sump. Everytime I lift a rock up a crapload of detritus falls out... but I am continuing my aquascaping this weekend, so once I get that rock to the main tank, the detritus will get the *(&*(& blown out of it, and it will end up in the overflow and then in the skimmer

I also need to dial my skimmer in to skim a little more wet. It is way too dry right now...hey its all part of the learning curve with BB isnt it? I'll get it right eventually. I could have given up like those who switch to BB, dont do it right, and claim BB is a joke. I know it isn't, I just need to do my tweaks here and there and it will be back to normal.

What do you guys think about my main return though. I have a genx pcx 40... it does around 1190gph but that is without zero head... I am guessing I am not getting more than 800gph from it, maybe 700. You think that is enough for a 180 dislpay +120 sump? Gotta figure water volume of around 200-220gals. That is only like 3 or 4 times turnover per hour.

Gal, those colonies look real good. The tank doesn't look too bad, seems like there's more tweaking needed to be done with flow. You'll get there. No biggie. BTW how's the baby????

baby is doing great..sleeping through the nite finally...smiles alot, starting to be a lot more active...i cannot complain.

I have a ton of flow...but I just need to optimize water conditions...couple more water changes and removing rocks from sump will solve some of this issue.

I'll get better pics once I get my new macro lens.
