Question

New Nano Reef Advice Wanted

Hi. I have a 2 1/2 gallon tank that has been up and running for about 2 months. I have a ten watt 50/50 bulb which seems to be providing very good light. I also have about 3 lbs of live tonga rock covered in coralline algae and live sand substrate. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, and salinity levels are all very good and stable. The inhabitants at this time are a tiny six line wrasse, an even smaller yellow watchman goby and some nassarius snails. I would really love to add some corals and/or anemones to this tank. Can you have both coral and anemones in one tank? Any advice on what to add and where to get very small coral or anemones?

Thanks in advance,
Anita

P.S. I also have a 45 gallon tank with reef safe occupants that can accept anything that outgrows the nano.

welcome to TRT!

i would not suggest an anemone in a nano - they need more room and better lighting.
i have mushrooms, a frogspawn, xenias, acans, zoas, polyps, and leathers in my nine gallon. i dont have any fish in it - caused too many problems with the nitrates. i have snails and hermit crabs in it too.
i'd stick with the easy stuff. do some research on the net and see what each coral recommends for tank size. and, you'll get lots of advice from this forum. everyone here is really helpful.

Welcome to TRT! I also wouldn't put Anemone in a small tank.

nanos are very enjoyable little setups to have. the watchman goby is good as well as adding some corals but definately not an anemone. Zoos or mushrooms or some other smaller easily trimmable corals are good. the six line will grow to big for it even though he is only gonna top out at around 4 inches. Good luck and keep us posted.

I have a leather and a star polyp I am willing to share.

PS - I think a 2 gallon tank is big enough if the anemone is the only thing in there ... except a clownfish of course =)

Lighting will be your biggest problem.

My white sebae anenome was about 3" when I purchased him.
He is now about 6" in diameter. He is a difficult creature (hand fed).

Nano Tank Update

As predicted the six line got too big for my tank. I didn't realize how big he was until I added a tiny clownfish. He has been moved to a bigger tank for now and may be looking for a new home. I added a button polyp coral frag. I'd be interested in opinions on other good starter corals.

got any pics of the tank? what do you have so far? zoas are always a nice addition to any tank - they add a lot of color.
