From the research I have done I have one LS close to my house and another on my way home from work. I stopped by the one close to my house this weekend, and it was very impressive to me. The staff seemed to know what they were talking about, and they have a very large variety. The thing I liked the best was that the employees didn't seem to be "fishing for high dollar customers".
LFS's can lead you the way wrong way real easy,.. I know one by my house that will happily reccomend a seaclone, and they know full well that it's junk, but simply don't care.

There are allot of good skimmers out there, though even more bad ones,. but I think sump setup comes before talking about skimmers. The thing that I've found is most helpfull to beginners is to see a tank up and running,.. then you can run through all the components, and both see and hear what they do for the system. That helps get a picture in your head about what everything is doing and why it's needed.
