Total Devastation
I went camping over the weekend and as near as I can tell, this is what happened: for some reason, my power went out and when it came back on, one of the GFCIs tripped. A couple of things didn't come back on--the most important of which was my window air conditioner. I have a few tanks and MH lights in a small room and the temp of my tanks was over 90. This was made worse by the fact that I turned off the house air while we were gone.
Pretty much all my corals and fish are dead.
The house was a smelly mess when I came in the door and when I saw the tanks I almost got sick to my stomach--they were so cloudy I could barely see in. My clown, tang, and a damsel are still hanging in there as of now but all my other fish are dead. Most of the sps are dead in my frag tank so I can't even repopulate.
I did large water changes with cold tap water to try and save what's left. I'll be back at it as soon as I can get RO mixed up.
When I think about how much time and effort I put into these tanks over the last 5 yrs. I just wanna cry.

That suck's real bad, sorry to hear about your loose Dave.
You know you can come over and take what ever you want from my tank. I know that Jaim is looking to get rid of many frags also.

Well, pretty much all my coral are dead--besides a few straglers here and there. All my fish are dead so far--besides, surprisingly, my clown tang. He actually started to eat a little Nori--poor fish, I found him on the carpet one day and now this. It's funny that some consider these difficult to keep but mine outlasted a 3 stripe damsel. Another surprising survivor, so far, my crocea clam.
I am now weighing my options as far as what I'm going to do next.

I don't know how bad it looks, but I have had some corals look very dead and I just leave them in the tank and some have come back around. Just a thought.

Dave.. that blows!! Your welcome to frags of my stuff...
The crocea being alive doesn't suprise me... I don't know what you've torn down yet but you may just want to run carbon to and remove the dead fish... then see what's left after water clears..

Dave,
I am so sorry to hear about your tank. As with the others, you are welcome to come over and oick out whatever you want frags of in my tank. I had already fragged the green acro from the frag purchase at Phil's for you. I am glad that you didn't pick it up yet. Anything else you need, let me know.

It's really hard to describe how bad things were--I'm actually surprised ANYTHING lived. 2 days later and I still can't get the smell out of the room. I had left some corals in there the first nite in hopes that they would make it--I wish I had just taken them out as they just continued to rot and caused further problems.
My tank had so many corals in it that once a certain number died and overwhelmed the filtration it started a snowball effect that just spiralled into disaster. All that decay coupled with the super high temps probably left the water with about zero oxygen.
I'm going to start another thread dealing with ways to avoid disaster and if there is even any possibility of a "fail-proof" set-up.

Truly sorry for your loss. As a newbie this is one of my biggest concerns as I live in an area often hit with the tail end of hurricaines. Will follow this thread looking for advice on power outages. Best of wishes in rebuilding your tank!
