sump or wet dry?

Which is better for the long run? I have a 125gallon tank and want the best suggestions for a long lasting and succesful setup. right now i have a proclear wet dry fur up to 125gallons, but i have an extra 40 gallon aquarium that i can use for whatever would be beneficial.

Reef or Fish only?
Wet Dry filters are thought to be nitrate factories, & not so good for reef tanks.

If you have a decent amount of live rock it should handle all the biological filtration on its own.
So I vote sump with a large skimmer.
