SPS and VHOs
Does anyone know if this is possible? I think it is but then again everyone says that you need MHs for them to thrive. I started to get a couple and they are doing great. Nice growth with no loss of color. I don't want to push my luck and get others and it not work as well as the ones I have now (2 diff. birdnest {pink and green, elkhorn, purple acro, green slimer, green pavona, and a couple pocs)

I know that bklynmet has several species of SPS corals and last I saw he was running either VHO's or T5's. Bklynmet, correct me if I'm wrong.

I think he's running T5
Anything is possible, provided the right conditions. When I started thinking about upgrading my lighting from PC I started a few threads and after a few PM's with Whiskey (he knows a TON about lighting) he even told me he has a friend with SPS thriving under PC.
No as far a VHO... I think those are the lease powerful of all flourscents. with the WPG theory obsolete now, it comes down to PAR. VHO's dont have the penatration to support SPS in a "deep" reef tank enviromemnt. Provided enough wattage the may survive HIGH in the tank.
Personally... If I where going to try it I would get the tank going and slowly start adding a few less light demanding SPS slowly working my way to the more light demanding types. Although if you have another system to fall back on Go for it and if you see any singns of problems get them back into a system that can support them.
Since the birdsnest are doing well you may be on to somthing....

Didn't want to butt into the club forum, but VHO are better than pc bulbs in Par. They can support SPS low in the tank if enough are used, but the heat they give off is the downfall. From worst to best, PC is the worst at par, mostly due to inefficient reflectors that is hampered by bulb shape, then VHO and then T5 (if they are running a good individual reflector, with out the reflector, they are not that great either)...

I have the uri bulbs w/built in reflectors. I have 2 48" super actinics, 2 48" actinics whites and 1 36" super actinic. The only reason why I think it is working, is the purple acro that I have was given to me browned and is starting to turn purple again with the neon green polyps.

I was just about to edit my post about the VHO having the least par....
I'd say wait and see is the acro is getting color back thats a good sign.

I say if you already have some and they are doing fine, go for it! I'd stay away from wild colonies for a while though.

I have seen good SPS growth from VHO only setups. Usually the SPS are kept higher in the tank. Some of the easier ones, such as caps, can be kept a little lower. For a great example of caps growing under a VHO setup look at the orange cap in Parasite's tank. The bulk of his growth came before he added MH lighting to his setup I believe.
As with anything in this hobby, go slow and see what works for your particular setup and what doesn't.
