Should i Have bought it?

Hello.
I went to my LFS today and bought 2 almost dead colonies of favia and galaxia.

The favia I think I can save. There's enough of it that I believe would survive. The galaxia is another matter.

In the LFS, it's kinda hard to see the condition of the galaxia. I just recently put it into my tank, and found that most of the heads are at it's skeletal remains. There's still some life around the branches, and maybe the head itself is shrunken into the skeleton, that I can't see it.

I've had some success bringing back corals in my tank. Now, I wonder if I should have tried with the galaxia. $10 for an almost dead colony, it could make a comeback, can't it?

Thoughts? Stories that you have to relate?

I don't see anything wrong with picking up a downward spiral piece of coral, to try to revive it. A lot of times at a localLFS, i try to do that, with the corals they carry,,either they are not caring for it properly,,or it's going downhill, and tell them i'd take it (or they oughta frag it , to try to save it) and see if i could bring it back around,,,hardly ever works , at least for me, tho a buddy of mine, who now is a ex reefer , had better luck talking them out of the poor condition coral,,he even brought back frags grown from some of the stuff he got, and told the place, he will take them back, it they show signs of crapping out again.

I think you prob have a good chance on bringing those corals back , to a certain extent,,,I have a Favia, that was in pretty bad shape when i got it, it came back a great deal , tho it did not look like a perfect specimen now,,but it regrew it's base back , over the skeleton that was showing on most of it's body,,,not perfect, but at least hanging in there,,,,

Good luck with your new things, hope they come back real good for you!

I have a piece of galaxia that I have neglected and relegated to my 20g and it has been heading downhill steadily. I am going to frag it and hope that by doing so I will rejuvenate it. I would take the piece you have and frag out the good stuff. With good light and in a good system it should recover as they are fairly hardy corals. They are aggressive and they can sting anything around them. Some corals in lfs' suffer from poor lighting, poor water quality, low salinity and just shock.....once placed in a system with optimal parameters and light they do a complete turn around.

Has anyone ever bought a rock with polyps from the lfs only to find out later that they had wonderful colours that were'nt apparent when they bought it? same sort of thing......

i was in petland in columbus the other day and tried to do the same thing. there tanks always look bad and the corals are always dying. i tried to talk them into cutting the prices on some so i could try to save them but they wouldnt budge. full prices for mostly dead coral. so i guess they will sit there and die because the store wouldnt discount.

i guess they get credit with their supplier if the coral dies. a real shame because they will just go and pull more out of the ocean .

I did a similar thing I was at Petco about a year ago and they had a Gold Maxima clam under their lights. It was so retracted that you could barely see the flesh. They wanted 50.00 for it and would not budge. I guess it died or someone bought it thinking it was ok to keep it under pc's or stock NO lighting. It is a shame what commercial pet stores get away with!

When I handle my galaxia it all the polyps shrink into the individual heads and it looks completely white and dead. Hopefully yours will come back out once it is acclimated. Out of curiosity, where did you get yours?
