Anyone in NIMAS have seahorses?

I'm going forward with the seahorse tank....
Aftertalking to the guys at Pruess last week I decided to go forward with seahorses. That was the origonal intent of the hex. It now has water and sand. I plan to put about 10lbs LR and 10 lbs Base rock, some macro and and a few softies, shrooms, waving hand and zoas...

Just wondering if anyone else had them.....

I'd love to have a seahorse tank someday...pipefish are pretty cool too. Saltwaterfish.com had seahorses super cheap on their specials this week.

Since the tank just got setup I need to let it cycle...
I'm going to MWC this week and ask jim If I can go to the farm and handpick a 10-15lb. thats real porous and try to find some that has areas that the sorses can hold onto.
I was thinking about a few pipe fish in there too. I need to check compatibility....
My only concern is feeding... but with my wife a stay at home mom I'll have to have her feed them...

Dave if your interested in keeping them what ever species I get I plan to get a tank raised, mated pair.... So hopefully will have babies....

I'll need some macro if anyone has some..

note that you'll need to generally keep the water cooler than a typical reef for their long-term health...

will you be getting them from preuss?

With the ambient house temp at 69in the summer and 71 in the winter I should ne have a problem heeping the tank temp in the mid 70's. with only PC lighting and a low flow return there shouldn't be too much excess heat.


Probally won't get them from pruess... When I was there they had only 2 and they were already sold.
Like dave said saltwaterfish has a great deal on them

Can't beat that price.
I plan 4-6 sea horses and a few pipe fish

I aldo plan to buy a fre hundred pods and hopedully that can reproduce quicker then they are eaten.

My only dealings with seahorses is that they must be feed quite often (3+ times a day), as I recall.

In my reasearch I have found that a healthy supply of pods helps.

and my wife can feed them thu the day

Don't be surprised if saltwaterfish.com sells out of the seahorses quickly--they probably don't have a whole bunch and they should go quickly at that price.
I've got lots of caulerpa macro if you want some. Having some growing in the tank might give them something to hang on to.

Thanks Dave I might take some if MWC has none.
I supercharged my cycle last night by adding 30 gallons from the 75 and cured LR from the 75. I will probally try to order the horses tonnight.

FWIW, pipefish can be pretty expensive. There are some as cheap as $30, but I've seen Atlantic blue stripes go for $140

actually the ones I want are the dragonface (alligator) there only about $25
And to be honest with you if money was an issue I would not have taken up this hobby
