My personal favorite DIY skimmer is the "Easy as Pie Skimmer". There's a looong thread on RC with pix and supply list.
Hookup to a Mag5 and boom it works. Total cost is under $50.00 - $60.00
Unfortunately I'm on dialup now so can't do a search for exact url for ya.

mine.
there are several out there. from simple air driven to big eductor driven models. if you can make some bubbles you can make a skimmer out of it. once you understand how a skimmer works the possibilities are just about endless. the skimmer bodies themselves can be made for around $50. so it is no big deal to change it around until it is just the way you want it. the important thing to consider is the drive pump. the better the pump you get for this the greater the options in air delivery methods you can use. then again a dumb Maxi-Jet is plenty of pump to power an air driven skimmer.

Go to reef central, DIY, Snailmans 4" works awesome for my 45t. Would probably work fine for my 125, but I think I will build the 6" for it. LOL
