Sizing your drain here

To help with your drain sizing (which we make mistake the most) to surfice your water output is very important. It's cost alot of time and money to drip the pipe out and reinstall.

Engineering rules of thumb:
1. Design your drain line at 50% full for 3" or less and 65% for bigger pipe.
2. The shortest vertical route is preferable. Elbows and horizontal routes should be avoided as much as possible.
3. A velocity of 4 to 8 ft/sec is recommended.

The table below is calculated at 50% full on gravity drain systems on tabulated flow value. Reasonable safety factors are included in these flowrate.

Pipe Size Percentage Full (%) = GPM @ 1/4" per Ft Or Greater slope.
1" pipe
50%= 162

1.5" pipe
50%= 522

2" pipe
50%= 1020

3" pipe
50 = 2904

4" pipe
50%= 6120
55%= 7140
60% = 8220

Again this is just a guideline for drains.

yeah no doubt great info. tomorrow i was plannign to post a thread asking what size i should make the drains on my new tank sicne i'm getting the tank drilled next week!!!
