resealing tank ?

I have a 29 gal tank, stand, and canopy that I'm giving to a friend of mine. The problem is that I've had this tank for about ~8 years and the silicone is looking kinda rough. It does not leak and I had it running until about a month ago. Should I let it go and hope for the best, or carefully scrape the loose silicone away and reseal it with new silicone? Next question, does it have to be the silicone from the lfs or will regular 100% silicone from Lowes be ok?

100% pure clear silicone is fine. Make sure it is clear, 100% pure, and doesn't have mold retardants or other stuff in it. Let it cure for 24 hours before adding water too. That is if you decide to reseal, it can be a pain. Also, the best thing to do when resealing is to disassemble the entire aquarium and scrape ALL silicone off and reseal the entire aquarium, but with a small one like a 29 you may be able to run a bead in the inside over the old silicone. Maybe someone else can chime in.

DAP makes a silicone specifically for aquariums. I have found it at Ace Hardware in the past. 100% silicone.

I have an old style (internal glass overflow) 65gal 24” x 18” x 26” deep tank that’s just over ten years old so far so good. I think that the next time I take it down I probably should re-seal it! But I believe in if it’s not broke don’t fix it

Oops I guess I forgot to mention that my tank is in the basement right next to a floor drain just in case.

Joel - I resealed a 20. All I did was scrape the silicone inside the tank down without actually pulling the glass apart and then ran the new silicone beads. That was about a year ago and so far so good, I think this is a good time to knock on wood.......

this may work on the smaller tanks, but i would not suggest doing it to larger tanks.

he's giving the tank to a friend...if it leaks, it will be his former friend instead of his friend, thus, the 'future' former friend

now you can help me out on one of my (many) slow days!

Cut out the old silicone with a razor blade, clean the surfaces with rubbing alcohol, put masking tape on either side of the seam (to keep it tidy).

We use GE Silicone I available at your local hardware store - this is "outdoor use" stuff with no mildew resistant chemicals (read: poisons) in it. We found out from GE that this is safe, and we re-sealed 6 - 75 gallon tanks a year and a half ago with it, and it's been just fine.

Run your bead of silcone, smooth it with a wet finger, and then peel the tape off, and you'll have nice clean lines. Let it cure for 24 hours, and then water test the tank.

We've done a number of tanks this way, but none over 75 gallons.

HTH

Sweet. I have resealed small tanks, but it always looked kinda messy, that masking tape tip is great, I will remember that, can't believe I never thought of it before!
