I could send you a nice cream flowerpot coral. My system is too clean for it and it requires spot feeding all of the time. I bet it would do great in a "Turbid Lagoonal System".

Or you can check some local pet stores. They have reptile cages that are very shallow.

Hey, I hope no one thought I was trying to pull a fast one or anything. It all started with the shattered tank, and the desire to get Genie more involved in the process. It tickles me when she says, "My Nano"
It seems there's often not enough "confessional" type stories, about what goes wrong when you're trying to do right. I was so stupid to set her up like that, I just didn't realize that the sides were tempered. The look on her face was priceless, but it wouldn't have been so funny if she'd gotten hurt. Of course the photo was a setup, after the fact.
I do apologize if anyone felt mislead. If you want, I'll get her to cancel her entry, but oh lord, will it cost me in clothes and jewelry.

Please stay in the buildoff! I have enjoyed this thread so far, and I am sure I will continue to be educated by it.
yardboy I totally agree with the lack of "confessional" type stories about what goes wrong when one is trying to do it right.
pinayreefer: I think you have some innovative ideas. I especially like the whole sponsor idea; in particuliar the part where you stick your systems sponsors on your stand, "like a race car (Quote per pinayreefer)".
I am planning on becoming a part of the Buildoff, and I also have been planning on quite a few DIY modifications to my future nano tank system. I am going to attempt to be creative to keep my costs as low as possible, with out sacraficing my over all design ideas.
Thank you so much,
for a fun thread to read.

Thanks Guys. I hear her out there now, hacking at rock with that chop saw. She was scared of it at first, but now acts like she's a professional. I think her tank is going to be really cool. Even better, she's got mch more skill with a camera than I do. I'm embarassed to admit how many of the photos of my tank are her shots.

The more the merrier i say.
Besides, if 'help' was really an issue for anyone participating in this little buildoff, im sure it would be taken into consideration by the TRT crew at judging time anyway.
But then again people with 20 years experience competing against people with very little experience could also be an issue.
Then again so could an aussie with his own lfs (of sorts)!!
Reef on!!

here's the Calfo return manifold Rogerio helped me with. Later I spray painted it black to match the trim of the tnk, and to hide it.
The rock work is coming together, wanted to wait until the return manifold was in place before putting the last rock in. Also did a leak test before adding rock to the overflow. Whew, no leaks!

Sometimes Rogerio gets too serious about MY tank. He didn't even know I was taking the picture, said he was trying to figure out how to attach the manifold. Good grief.

I've been busy the last few days, stdying for an exam in school and working on the tank. Got the return manifold installed, finished up on the rock and scored a DIY tv stand that Rogerio helped me modify into the tank stand. We tore out a middle shelf, painted the interior white, and drilled a hole for the drain and return. Here's a shot of the preparation:
and the completed setup front and back. We're running it with freshwater for a few days to leak check and rinse everything down. The drain makes a little noise, so Rogerio told me to "put a sock in it", which helps a lot.

He catches me sometimes, when I don't know exactly what he's talking about, but I know now! It won't be an LOL sign I'll be whopping him with!
When I asked what kind of light I could use, he handed me this metal halide fixture he'd scavenged from a used car lot, after a hurricane. I was so embarassed. But I'll show him, I've got an idea that'll work great for this fixture. A little paint and some wood and it will be fine.
