I did not think about this and will be trying it as soon as I get home. Thanks!

Just went home for lunch to check on the tank and raise the durso. I am now down to one zoanthid, one acan, and one fungia...

On the bright side, the skimmer finally started to work a little and the durso modification raised the water line up perfectly! I have found a Mag 9.5 and will possibly be adding a scwd to my cls this weekend.

I think I am going to buy a small cheap softie for a 'test'. My water perameters are perfect except for ammonia which was a little high after everything started to die, but now is back to 0. If the new addition does well, I can then rule out a toxin and point the finger more toward something that went amuck during transport. Suggestions???

awww sorry about your frags John. I'll be glad to give you some SPS once it grows. Otherwise I have plenty of GSPs and toadstool leathers. Oh and I suppose I could frag my colt since Eric gave me a nice sized one- let me know what you need.

Unhappy

I just got home from work, took a quick look at my tank and thinking of you checked the progress of your entry. Needless to say reading about your losses has made me quite sad for you We both know that there is always a ray of sunshine to even the gloomiest of days. You know that myself and many of our friends in Georgia will gladly help you restock your tank once your tank settles out. Good news...The freight charges that you were charged are bogus. I've filed a claim with fedex and the BBB in Georgia as the package rate should've been $78.00. Now we both understand a markup, but $144.00 was outrageous. Fedex was flabbergasted by the charge so we'll see if I can recoup some money. When I contacted the shipping source and inquired about a possible rate error, I was told very abruptly that that was their markup and was hung up on. But that is water under the bridge as we both know that the replacement cost of the items and the fact that they all made the trip alive and kicking far offsets the cost to get them here. Shoot me a PM on anything that you want me to start growing frags of for you and you can consider it done. Best of luck and hang in there!! I am just a PM or phone call away if you need anything.

One more thought..You mentioned silicone. What kind of silicone did you use? Was it labeled for aquarium use? I use GE silicone II window and door silicone. There is also GE silicone II kitchen and bath, that has some kind of anti mildew compound in it that is "bad"!!
If this makes you feel any better..My tank has been running great, I purchased a new 40 gallon breeder glass tank, that I baffled for my sump when I first set up my tank. I had to disassemble my stand to put it under my tank, it fit and functioned perfectly. Last Friday night my wife asked me if I had spilled some water by the tank? Upon my inspection I discovered that the entire back pane of glass had a beautiful crack running virtually the entire length of my sump. There was only one way to get it out from under the tank to replace it...With a hammer and piece by piece......I was anything but happy. It was replaced with a 27 gallon plastic tote, This is not what I wanted for a sump, but it will have to do. Lastly, before you purchase the mag 9.5, try switching the mag 7 and 5 around and see if that will give you the flow results that you are looking for.

Bill,
The first sillicone I used was "Aquarium Silicone" and I did about 75% of the work with it. The next was the "Silicone II". I did however use some of the left over "Silicone II Kitchen and Bath". I noticed where it said mildew resistant, etc. but upon further inspection, the regular Silicone II has the EXACT same ingredients... Fortunately for me things have stopped dying...another point of interest is that while the corals started dying, none of the snails died. Anyway, I have the pink/orange zoas you gave me, a fungia, and the acan. It has been 3 days since the last death and things are looking up. I modified my overflow with good results. Pics later.

Glad to hear that things have settled out and that the losses are over. I fragged the neon green sarco over the weekend and made two small frags. Looking forward to seeing pics of the tank now that it is running. How did you make out with the move? When I told my daughter that you were looking for a home for "Chicken Wing" she wanted me to drive back to Georgia and pick him up for her. LOL

john,

If possible, pull, out the silicone that has the additives in it (the mildew inhibitors are not required for labling in the US for products intended for external use (or outdoor use or construction, etc). Replace all of it with aquarium-safe silicones, as this will definitely have a toxicity for the system as the silicone cures. The period when acetic acid is still curing/flashing off still allows for dissolution of the substances in the silicone, once the silicone finishes curing, it is supposedly finished allowing for movement of solvent-based substances, but I would not depend on longterm use of this stuff based on suppositions. You would not want to build a house on shifting sands: failure-to-thrive issues in the future could be linked to the silicone. I imagine the actual toxicity will depend on how much you have used and now new it would be. I'd pull it ALL out, even if it means rebuild of the tank.

Sorry man...

Sorry man...
...talk about a kick in the sack... I would love for this to be the one instance where you are wrong concerning chemistry...but I know better...

I will tear it down this weekend and start over. Thank God I still have the other tank...which my current hood will still fit...

Thanks Vince. Sometimes I wonder if this aquarium is meant to be or not. I have found yet another MAJOR issue with the tank. My Jager heater is set at 79 degrees. I just put a probe in the tank...92.2 degrees.... If the silicone did not kill them I am certain this was the problem. I THINK the heater is too tall and therfore is not being submerged to the proper level, creating a false ambient temp reading inside the heater, subsequently pushing the heater to stay on continuously...or maybe it is just a faulty heater since it is supposed to have an automatic shutoff just in the event something like this occurs.... ...my fault for not having an easy to read thermometer...

Ouch!! I've never used that little knob and adjusted my ebo jag, but I have mine set to about 67 I think and it kicks the heater in around 76. My tank got up to 84 yesterday with that warm weather- gonna have to get a small fan on it.

So sorry to hear John! I'm growing frags for ya as fast as I can. But it may be April before I see ya again.

Geez...I only have 5 days left to post a picture! In the meanwhile, I have just ordered a Deltec MC500 to replace the Aqua C EV 120. The Deltec is supposed to be whisper quiet, has less than half the energy consumption than the Mag 5 and should run alot cooler...I never want to have a heat issue again...my MH only changes the water temp about 1 degree so to eliminate other possible sources...at least I can solve the "wife is disturbed because of the noise" problem
