I started the door for the stand this morning. It took a long time but I finally got my diagonals to within 1/16" so I figured it was close enough I made a frame out of 1 x 2 then filled it in with 1 x 4s. As you can see I have to wait for my brother in law to get home so I can go over and use his table saw for the final piece. If the glue dries, I hope to get it attached to the stand tonight.

No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn a year or two ago
Seriously, this is actually my first "furniture" attempt. I have built one other stand out of 2 x 4s that has no sides or doors and it is....umm...well, it looks better the further away from it you get and I built a dog house last week. I also put some siding on our new house (that we have yet to move into) a few weeks ago. That pretty much sums up my carpentry experience. Thanks for the compliments though!

Dang Tim, I wish you would have told me to stop sooner, I just got finished sanding the door and it is almost 11:00 . I did not get to mount it though I am done with construction on the door and stand; I am taking your advice and allowing everything to cure over night. I found a really neat looking door knob at Lowe's tonight. It looks like a conch shell and matches the finish on the hinges. No stain selection yet although I have decided to stain instead of paint the exterior. I am thinking that I will leave it a glass bottom instead of adding cutting board so I am going to paint the bottom of the part where the tank sits white. I have vacuumed out most of the sand on my current tank and the rocks seem to slide around so I am a little apprehensive about leaving it just glass, any suggestions?
BTW, the halide pendant came in today. It is a PFO 150W DE w/ remote HQI ballast and 10,000k XM. It will mount in the hood, whenever I get to make it. I hooked it up on my sump tank today and WOW. I have used nothing but PC lights thus far so this is my 1st halide experience. The amount of light is amazing. Two questions:
1. Can I put the remote ballast in my stand? I will have to add a shelf for it to set on about mid way up the stand, but this is no problem as long as there is no reason why it can't go in there.
2. I can't adjust the height of the light over my sump so instead of gradually lowering the light over a period of several days, can I just turn it on, say for 4 hours tomorrow and increase the duration by about 30 minutes every two or three days?

one way to gradually increase light with a FIXED lighting fixture is to put several pieces of screening on top of the tank. And every so often, just remove on of the sheets. I've heard about it, not done it, so hopefully someone else can chime in with how long in between you wait to remove another sheet, and maybe share what KIND of screening to use, so you don't corrode your water.

I originally chose 'fruitwood' for the stain color. I stained the door as a test. It dried far too yellow for my liking so I sanded it back down and went back with 'provential'. The construction of the stand is done as is all the sanding. I decided to use latex caulk for the bottom 4-5 inches (pictures 1 and 2). In the event there are spills/overflows, the water will stay in the stand and not on the floor. The entire stand is stained inside and out. I will go back and paint the bottom 4-5 inches of the inside of the stand white so that little dropped pieces of whatever will be easier to see and the caulk will be covered up. The bottom of the stand (picture 3) has one coat of polyurethane (I went with a satin finish poly) and the outside of the door (picture 4) has two coats. I hope to 'get er' done' tomorrow or the next day.

Wow, that stand looks professionally made. You say that's your first attempt at furniture making?! Well, I think you've tapped a hidden talent with your woodworking.

Looks great dude.
I've never had much luck with the screening jive. I's a real pain to keep in place, and the difference between one sheet and another is quite high, light level-wise. I've always just increased light duration, starting at about an hour and moving up 5 minutes each day. I know that's a PIA to reset your timer each day, but it's worked for me, and later when the timer instructions are lost, you'll be able to change it with your eyes closed!

Thanks Casey, Flame, JCox, and Roger. I have the timer set at 4.5h and will dial it up in 15min increments every few days. I have 4 coats of poly on the outside of the door and one on the outside of the stand. Hopefully the stand will be done in two days and I can get started turning the bottom of my tank into swiss cheese Six holes in the bottom
