livestock concerns?
After sorting through the entries Im concerned, some of my favorite TRT members are participating and I will be exited to see the results. Their planning & husbandry are role-models to the rest of us.
Some of the plans Ive seen may become a livestock massacre.
Stuffing 8 fish w/corals in a 10 gal tank???? Tangs and Nanos?? You have got to be kidding me! Correct me if Im wrong but the largest challange in a nano is the small amount of water you have to work with. Dillution is the solution to pollution, thus a nano IMO is more challanging then other tanks, what could crash a nano may have no effect a 150
Bioload is essential to long term success of these systems, and stocking levels are key.
Mabye Im posting this in the wrong forum, mabye Im over-reacting, mabye I just watch to much animal planet!

Well i have no doubts that the snowcovered alaskan made those coments directed towards me. Firstly the amount of fish i place in a tank is not determined, the fish i listed were ones i particularly like and i was/will choose some of them NOT ALL.
I appreciate the input and experience of many people in this little web-site but please GET A LIFE!!!. i refuse to take bossy advice from people who live in places such as Alaska or most of the USA. Hohenstly! I live on the ocean, i've grown up with reefs and tropical locations and am not refined to pretty pet shop aquarium designs. I am a teen kid who is making a reef tank that replicates the reel world reefs!!!, not the normal, almost empty, easy to sustain inland pet-shop designs. I'm breaking with tradition, making a unique system and taking up a challenge. There are abnormal organisms and items i've added to my tank, in a not normal setup(which i'm not inclided to tell). AND BY GOD IT"S FLOURISHING. It will be cycled in a few days. Now i thought such difficult tasks was the aim of this competition, so please stop critisising me and get on with your own "unique"(not) design.

Lets stay away from personal insults and have a good time on this build off. I think most of us have a pretty good idea of what will and what won't work in our tanks, And if someone hads a concerns that don't mean he was aiming it towards You. Like everything You have to take it or leave it, I don't think the need for more insults are needed. So lets get on with this build off and do some great tanks.

Well said Vince.
This buildoff is to help show techniques, both building and husbandry. Lets keep this fun and more importantly insult free.

Well, I think that(oh, god, here we go with another opinion...) alaskaknucklehead has a really good point...although maybe a bit brusque on the delivery. I believe that we have an obligation to provide a safe and stable environment for the lives we've agreed to care for. When we agree to care for an animal, we make a contract with them that they will be provided with everything in our power to keep them in a secure and comfortable environment. You wouldn't put a great dane in a little box and keep it there 24x7, so why would you do the same to a fish?
Also, I'm not entirely sure what nationality has to do with ability to keep a reef tank, or the speciousness of advice given thereof. Last I checked, America had an enormous amount of coastline, with a fair part of it sustaining tropical reefs. But that is no guarantee of ability to keep a reef tank. Believe me, I lived in florida, and there are some people there who shouldn't be allowed to keep a goldfish.
Incidentally, replicating the real world reefs means large colonies of similar corals separated by large spaces from dissimilar corals, an enormously stable water system with the ability to quickly dilute harmful chemicals, and a sustainable bioload based on competition for limited resources. Hardly a description of a nano reef tank.

I plan on adding at least one fish to my nano and possibly an anemone crab. But I also plan on haveing the filtration to accomodate these poop factories. But since this will be a setup for my GF it will be her choice. From the sounds of it she is leaning toward a planted nano with a couple seahorses. Either way I agree with the comment about how husbandry counts. That will also be a judging point in the contest. How well our nano systems can provide a healthy environment for our choosen livestock. As for folks useing this as an excuse to get nasty isn't called for. I didn't suggest this contest to start an international wizzing contest. To each his own. The last time I checked this site wasn't about critisism but advice. That's why I am here.
