Kayla's Nano! (complete with illustrations!)

Here goes:

My submission is my rough sketch (which displays my amazing artist abilities) inside of the hex tank i got! (5 gal) I plan to have a 10 gallon sump with a refugium. I'm also thinking of doing a constant watch change set up, where there are constant water changes as opposed to having it once a week or so. Please try not to giggle too much!

That fish looking like thing is some type of goby... I also plan to pair him up with a pistol shrimp.. to get some symbosis in there.

I also plan to have some of the following:
Acropora
Montepora
Trumpet Corals
Feather Dusters
Zooanthila
Ricordia

Cheers!

Some info on our plans for this nano masterpiece!

we're gonna build an overflow for this hex. Plumb it down to the 10gln sump/refuge. Gonna build a closed loop and drill input/ouput holes in the back. Had a hard time finding a pump that was small enough...heheh. I'm figuring 150gph cls and a 50gph return from the sump for this 5 gallon hex?

Also, after reading the Reefkeeper's article on Water changes, and how more frequent (but smaller) changes yield better dillution and nutrient export results. And it talks about a constant water change to achieve the maximum results. I think we're gonna try it.

The concept is to drip out water from the tank (maybe 2 drops a sec?), and have fresh SW drip back in at the same rate. Constantly! Think it might be a neat experiment with that.

Very proud of Kayla and her drawing, ideads, etc. She's really getting into this, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing how this progresses.

We'll be doing a good bit of work on this over the weekend, so stay tuned!

Still not sure how we're gonna handle lighting (see next post), but we'll figure something out.

How are you guys doing light? Need some ideas.

I mean...I saw PinayReefer's recreation of the Sun (), but is MH the only way to go to achieve 4-5x watts/gln? we're going with this 5 gln hex. So while the box says "PC ready", the max it can handle is an 11watt bulb. So we're definitely gonna have to go another way. And I can't imagine any other PC/VHO/T5/etc bulb that'll fit over this tiny guy.

I like to consider myself somewhat knowledgable on things, but when it comes to lighting, I'm not all that knowledgable. I know what PC/VHO/MH are, and I know the pro's/con's of each, but that's about it.

Do they make a MH bulb that's less than 50watts? Will it have the same spectrum?

Or I was thinking of maybe somehow funnelling light. If a PC bulb was too long for the tank, using reflectors, could I FUNNEL the light down to the size of this tank? (I know...sounds retarded...but maybe it would work?)

Just a little stumped on how we're gonna handle the lighting situation for this nano.

Look at this mammoth thread on a 2 gallon nano. He uses a 70W metal halide.

I might have to trash my Randal's Goby w/ the pistol shrimp idea... looks like a lot of people are doing it.
