I read the first line of your Macquarium and was heart broken..... GO DAWGS!!! Sorry, I HAD to do that and I'm sure you understand... Ashame you won't be back in the states in time to watch Georgia run over Tech

Since you are obviously the acclaimed DIYer please check out my entry and advise on the starboard issue. Your design looks awesome, glad to see you got something out of being at tech...Dang, I need to quit before you begin to take me serious

it is all part of the fun. BTW- you thought the Tech/Georgia thing was big. try living in NC. there it is the Duke/UNC/NC State/Wake Forest thing! it is a requirement to live in the state you have to have a preference for which team you root for!!

OK, massive design goal change. let me know if you all would be interested or not.

there seems to be a lot of interest in DIY projects. i am thinking of making this nano in the hopes of coming up with a parts list, so that we can do a group build of a complete nano system.

thoughts?

Sounds like a good plan Geoff. My nano is ground up, so I have a pretty intensive DIY list too.

Im supprised not more people are following this. I know i will be. Acrylic is also a problem for me as well. I have to drive to raleigh but there the cheapest i can get it is 50 bucks for a 1/4" sheet thats not big enould. And they dont even sell weldon anymore. Thats partially why my 6gal cube has come to a standstill. The other reason is that i was in a car wreck and spent all the money i had on repairing it. But my next pay check is soon. YAY i can finally feed my adiction. Reefer. Or is it Reefing.lol I agree that the rivalry of the north Carolina teams is a feirce one. My bro goes to state and my parents are alumni of a combined 4 florida colleges and my town is prodominently duke and UNC oriented.lol When asked my preference i either say no comment or that i dont follow sports.
I think i have an idea of what your doing although i could be wrong. I am thinking that you are thinking something like the highly regarded JBJ Nano Cube tho geared twords a more advanced crowd. Hace all sorts of skimmers and CLS and stuff in the back section. Even if your not going with what i think you are i think thats still a good idea. I decided to start my own nano buildoff with myself since i missed the deadline for this one. I am going to see if my 2.5 gal aga or my 6 gal acrylic or my 10gal aga will be better. Better even...I plan on having them all hooked together on one sump along with my 28 gal. Imposible some may say. Perhapps. But my contest has no deadlines...YAY. I think one of the other contenders in it may be cheating. Hes copying all my ideas including a 150w lighting system build off a sodium light from the street, a halide, and PCs. Like i said its an oddball. But anyway sorry to steal the thread. I may have missed it but what are you planning for lighting and the mystical Sandbed problem. As for size i have an idea for you. You mentioned that size was a problem. If it is the footprint that worries you i have an idea that i would like to throw out there. Perhaps its been said before but i just want to but my $.03 worth. In germany many many years ago when the industrial revolution took off or even perhapps before this time the streets of larger citys were bustling. Everyone wanted in but there was only so much room within the city walls. Ok perhapps this was in the midevil times. What does this have to do with reeftanking you may ask, It all deals with the footprint. I know you are good at DIYin so you should be able to do it. Instead of building out the germans built up. The footprints of the houses were small but as the structure got taller it got wider and deeper. Basicaly making a v Shape. \_/ Brilliant right. You could make a base for it that has a small footprint but gets larger to incorperate the tank. I am half thinking out loud and half rambling and perhapps half B.S. ing (j/k) and mabe ive spent the last few minutes writing about nothing but i just wanted to help because youve helped me and the other readers of this forum so so very much with your constant question answering and your great DIY projects. But anyway thats just my .07 cents worth, lol

i have been so busy with getting the mantled tank up, that i have not had any time for this at all. i was really hoping to get the materials in Ireland so i could build it there, but had other problems there also. i do plan on doing this as part of the DIY projects of the month series. whether or not this will be one month or several has yet to be determined. the plans are still being thought of, just have not had time to actually do a couple of prototypes for testing.

i understand the V tank idea. not a bad idea, unfortunately it will not work in this instance. i have a small cutout in the wall that i was hoping to put it in at the office. getting wider at the top would not help much here.
