when i had my sump running the first time i only had 2 plexiglass baffles. they had holes drilled in the top few inches and they (the baffles) were within an inch of the top of the tank, the bottoms were siliconed to the. bottom of the tank. i had some live rock and algae in there.
it kind of worked as a fallout chamber and i could siphon the crap out that settled...
really easy...
Quick sketch:
drain from main tank on the left, return pump on the right

dj it sounds like you should just stop on by and check out the tank at some point. I can go through how I had things setup on the bottom if you like.
as a side not depending on your pump and how much water you have going through will also affect the gurggling noise you hear. On a Mega overflow system its suppose to have about 600 gph and I was running a mag7 on it. I ended up switching my skimmer pump and return around. Now I have a mag 5 on the return and it is much quieter. the trade off is there is less gph coming out of return now but it is quieter. I do have other powerheads in the tank for flow also though so to me a 200 gph +_change isn't much. There are different ways of pluming to help reduce noise but its also trial and error.

Put it in the main section...the return water level will fluctuate with evaporatin (unless you have a good auto top off) which will cause the skimmer to work erratically.

aight.........i gots ur number.......ill give you a call this weekend....
the main issue i have with a top off is that my tank is about 50ft or so away from any water source....so i would still have to even fill a top off bucket or tank when needed....no way to run water lines to the tank....

yeah i was lookin at some options today for a top off....
i could actually tee it off at the washer....drop down thru the floor by the dryer vent....run it tru the crawl space...and then up behind the tank with alil hole in the floor that would be hide by the carpet......
but i dont have an ro/di unit......so that idea is just an idea.....

The last Rochester meeting had a demo on how to make a top off unit. I still have the design and instructions. It was very simple and looked dependable. I might be in the area soon, mail it, or wait till the next meeting if your interested.
