Skimmers
Hello,
New guy here with a quick question. Can anybody tell me a good skimmer that will not cost a months wages. I have a Seaclone now, works fine, but would like to upgrade. Been thinking about a Turbofloater. Thoughts?

HI, welcome to the club! Are you already with a system or are you just getting started?

I have a 60g hex, reef setup. I've been doing marine stuff for about 15 years, tropical since I was 10 (I'm 42 now). I've looked at the Remoras, haven't heard anything either way. The Seaclone I have does OK, just looking to upgrade. I do water changes and my water is very clear. Fish and corals all look good, good color, active. Just want some feedback and opinions. A friend of mine told me about this site and I've been checking for information. I will be dropping in often, will through my 2 bits in if I'm able. Nice to talk to you!

well not to be rude or crude, but the remoras, cprs, and even the prizms are better skimmers then a sea clone. just my two cents. and any of them 3 brands of skimmer will be a upgrade over the sea clone

Turbofloter is a great choice for a HOB skimmer. When you do get a skimmer just make sure it is a needle wheel or becket design. The turbofloter is a needle wheel skimmer.

Welcome to the club. I also think the turbofloter is a very good skimmer. It may be a bit of overkill though. Which one were you thinking of. I would not get a very big one because you do run into overskimming from what I heard from others. I know Chuck had to shut his skimmer off for a while to save some of his mushrooms and xenias.

The turbofloter 1000 HOB skimmer and just run it dry if you have to. I am running a skimmer rated at 1200 gallons on my system. My systems total water volume will be about 340 gallons after figuring the displacment of the LR.

I know what you're saying. I'm afraid of over skimming, too. I think skimming in general is a neccesary evil. I don't have the "yellow haze" like others talk about, so I'm not to concerned. I don't keep a heavy stock load, that way they all have a chance for some breathing room. My main focus is on getting rid of pollutants. Thanks for the thoughts.

The three highest rated HOB skimmers that won't cost a fortune that I was looking into when I was upgrading skimmers were the Coralife Super Skimmer, Turbofloater, and Remora (Pro is better). For the CSS and Turbofloater, just make sure that you get the needle wheele version. I ended up purchasing a slightly used Remora that works pretty decent. You can find some pretty good deals on any of these skimmers (slightly used) that are in good condition on both The Reef Tank and... groan....Reef Central.
