Question

Setting up a 180 FOWLR

Hi all,

I'm fairly new here and I some questions...I'm putting together my built-in 180 gallon FOWLR (upgrading from a 75).

After a lot of reading on ReefCentral I put down a 2" bed of the playsand. I'm aware of the risks associated with using silica playsand, but saving hundreds of dollars made it a risk I was willing to take.

Do I need to seed this sand with some live sand or will my live rock seed it eventually? Also, I have a 8" DSB in my fuge, do I need to seed this too?

Would you recommend a product like the GARF Grudge or just seed it with someone else's sand? Anyone have some sand to seed this for me?

Also, I wanted to add some Cheato in my fuge as well, anyone have experience with Cheato?

Thanks for your help!! I'll get pics up when it's filled up!!

seed it with sand from another persons tank. If you cant find anyone most lfs will sell you a cup if you ask. That is really all you need to get it started. You will need to do the same wth the fuge, and as far as the chaeto goes, it is the perfect macro algae because it never goes asexual.

Keep surfing the forums on Reef Central and searching WebWebMedia for the topics you're interested in. You could spend thousands of hours on those two sites and never become an "expert." But, the more time you spend online reading things on these two sites, the more ways you'll discover to do everything. With all things, some thing work better than others. But, most importantly, you need to research every decision you make and do what you think is best for you and your tank.

Thanks for the help! I'll check with my LFS since I don't know anyone else with sand (they all have the CC base).

Chazz, I'll let you know when I'm ready for the chaeto, thanks for the offer!!

Afish4u,

Menomonie lost the LFS awhile ago. I usually stop in EC or Hudson if I'm driving past. Any recommendations for EC? I go to the one by Memorial High since it's the only one I know.

I'll PM you about the sand, thanks for the offer!

My personal favorite is All-Reef, just North of Hudson. (www.all-reef.com) Peggy (who runs it) is moving to a new location in Stillwater, though, so she won't be open again until mid-May or possibly later. But, her customer service and livestock are top-notch. For me, it's a nice road trip over for an afternoon, and I'm more than willing to go out of my way to buy livestock from her. I have 100% confidence in her ability to give me the healthiest possible livestock. More than anything, though, she's one of the nicest people in the business and she's got an encyclopedia of fish knowledge in her brain.

Now, as far as Tropic Waters in Eau Claire, don't get me started... It disgusts me the way Jim and his staff "take care of" (or not...) the livestock. Let's just put it that way. I demand quality for the amount of money I put into my hobby, and that is certainly the last place I'd ever shop in Eau Claire, as far as LFS's go. It takes a lot of time and hard work to run a really good LFS, and few places seem to really commit to it. Give Peggy a chance (you can e-mail her at peggyn@all-reef.com), and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

-Joe

p.s. I don't work for Peggy or get any kickbacks or anything like that; I just think she's one of the best in the business. The more people I send her way, the bigger she can grow her business, and the more livestock she can bring in from me (and others...) to choose from. Most importantly, though, more people will see what's it's like to shop at a fantastic LFS. Enough said. Just give her a try when she opens back up in her new location.

Joe,

Thanks for the LFS recommendation! I'll check it out when I'm ready to buy more livestock. I'm just going to stay with the fish I have for now, I need to get past the other expenses associated with upgrading before my wife lets me buy more livestock!
