RBTA for Sale
Hey All!
My rose bubble tip anemone split this past week. I went from one to four in my tank! So its time to sell one. I removed this RBTA from a rock last night and it is currently in a plastic bag in my sump. I will be changing the water in the bag to keep it fresh and healthy. Since I don't have a camera I can't take a picture, but I can assure you its healthy and comes from a healthy tank. It is about 2 1/2 - 3 in. in diameter when open, and costs $25.00. Please PM me if your interested as I would love to sell it this weekend.
Thanks for looking!
David

Yeah, all of them are about a 1/4 of the original. Kinda crazy. I would cut the mother with a scissors, but that never did anything. I wonder now if starting to dose calc, mg, and alk along with the scissor cutting did the trick

Starting dosing could have stressed it out enough to cause it to split.
How much are you dosing David? Have you checked your pH both before and after dosing the alk part?

My RBTA split after it was moved into the new 75gal tank. Then, after a huge water change one day, it split again. Then, I gave the mother to Peggy at All Reef in exchange for some store credit. A day or two later, it split in her tanks...
Splitting "naturally" in a tank is usually indicative of something "unnatural" happening in the tank, such as a sudden change in water chemistry. I know some people who try to overfeed BTA's to make them split, but most often you'll hear of an anemone splitting after a traumatic event, such as being moved to a new tank or an unusually large water change. It seems to be a survival instinct. So, while it may be deemed "good" to have more anemones that you can try to sell, it's actually probably not the best thing for the anemone. But, that said, BTA's are very hardy, and so when they split it's usually no problem and they'll all heal up and be ready to multiply again...
I will say, it's pretty cool that you started with one and ended up with four after just one split!

Yeah, RBTAs usually split due to a stress response. Like you said Joe, its a survival instinct. So yes, my guess is because I was stressing it (on purpose) with cutting it, and also the dosing. I assume its a combination of the two stressors that finally caused it to split. The "momma" RBTA is now big again (probably about half its orginal size) and seems very healthy.
Since I now have three extra RBTAs, I might have to setup a 10g quaranteen tank for them until they all sell. Don't want them to sting any more SPS

Brain - I know my "regular" pH is 8.0. I don't recall off hand what it was after I dosed one night. It was higher than that, but not sure what.

I think that my RTBA, gotten from schneijt, is splitting. If it is... is anyone interested in it? $25.00 I'll try to get a pic and post it soon.

To be honest, I'm glad I got rid of my RBTA! Seems all of the splits I sold to others are splitting like crazy! With more and more sps going in all the time, I couldn't afford anemones roaming all over the place. My huge purple LTA is more than enough anemone for my 75gal reef...
But, glad to hear all of the RBTA's out there are prospering!
Joe

Nope. I though she was going to but, she's back to herself now. Bummer. She's gotten so big. I wish she would split.
