DJ do you have a picture of these snails? exactly what kind of nassarius are they? I haven't heard of anyone having them breed in a tank before.

I also have never heard of Nassarius snails breeding in the home aquarium. Is it possible you have Cerith snails that are doing the "bunny routine" perhaps? Are the shells a white/cream color, or a darker brown/black color? Only the N. Vibex snails are recommended for reef tanks. Lots of eBay sellers sell a darker colored Nassarius snail from the Carolinas, and it's a cool water species that has been known to absolutely destroy sand bed fauna in peoples' tanks that buy them...

So, I hope that you have N. Vibex snails and not the other kind, assuming you have Nassarius snails. Either way, I've never heard of them breeding in peoples' tanks, and I've kept them for years in my sandbed.

I ordered some from the same person, I didnt have as good as luck with the shipping like DJ and Carl did, but neways, I believe they are "whelks." They are very similar to the Nassarius Snail in apperance, but they dont burry themselves in the sand, theyre more of a glass and rock grazer. Im not 100% positive on the ID, but I was told by a friend of mine, who is also a LARKer, that they can be a nuscense to clams. Sorry DJ, I hope this doesnt affect any sales you had lined up, but im actually going to try to get rid of as many as I can, due to the fact that they, IF they are "whelks," may eat your clams....

I nearly bought some of the "bad" Nassarius snails on eBay, until I thought to myself: "I should probably Google it to see what kind of snails these darker-colored ones are." I'm glad I didn't end up buying any of them! I think that in a few weeks I'll order some N. Vibex and other snails from reefcleaners.com or whatever it is that I have saved to my "Favorites." When I place the order, I'll be sure to let others add to it and such.

Question

these have the long snout like regular tonga nass snails....and even have the same body shape....the shells are a dark color..maybe black...

like zach said they stick to manly the glass and rocks....i have a few that burrow into the sand but only like 1/4in and you can still see there shells....

im not sure where they came from...maybe the carolinas like zach said....but i didnt read that part....

they do a KILLER job on cleanin up the algea....

they are DEFF NOT CERITH snails...i have a couple of them....these have a pointed shell but not the LONG spear shape shell like a cerith....

a buddy of mine lives in N. CAROLINA and said that someone told him to go to the tide pools and you can get BLACK NASS snails at low tides...maybe thats what these are?? im not sure....

but they do in fact LAY EGGS....i cleaned a ton of them off my skimmer pump....

i mean if they are bad ill ditch them....and just not worry about it....

ill try to get a pic of them......but not sure how well its gona turn out...

maybe zach, carl, matt can get a pick of them that will show what they are...

Here's the website that made me decide against the Nassarius snail purchase from eBay. Is this what you ordered, Zach?

Yowzers. I'd read that page on Mark's website before, but I had forgotten how quickly whelks can completely consume a large, perfectly healthy clam.
