Mated Banggais!
I got three Banggai Cardinals when I road-tripped with Joe, Nick & Matt to Fosters & Smith up in Rhinelander. I now have a mated pair!
I came home after being away for the weekend and the one I suspected to be male is holding a clutch of eggs! Yippeeee!!
I have no predators in the tank, so it's actually possible that they could be raised. An idea would be to move him and my spiny urchin to the sump. Of course, I'd have to move the skimmer from that section so there wouldn't be any impeller danger, but I think it could be done. If you've seen my two-part tub sump design, I'd just need a bit of screening between the two halves and it'd be good to go. How cool, eh?

Sweet! So, is there still a third Banggai, or was he "taken care of" once the other two paired up? Congrats on getting the pair of cardinals you wanted!

The third will be going into a friend's tank. The poor thing hangs out all by himself at the other end of the reef.

The Babies Are Here!!!!!!!
Last night, after successfully hatching brine shrimp, I decided to catch Daddy and get him into a breeder box. After I moved him (by hand) I noticed a BABY in the bottom of the box almost immediately!! I was so excited. I went to put the net away and saw a WHOLE BUNCH of babies in it!!!!
So.... I quickly setup a small (1.5 gallon plastic hex tank) with some live rock, a heater and a little pump and carefully moved them. I have 14 babies!! Right away, I siphoned some baby brine shrimp and got them into the tank and immediately, the babies started eating! This morning, I still have 14 and they all look great.
I'm so excited! Now, I just have to do daily water changes (I'm not filtering the water so that brine are constantly in the water column for them to eat), and be sure that all params stay safe and I might just be able to raise them!!!

Well, we should have pics soon, and that's all we'll have. The babies all perished overnight. They weren't looking too good last night. I did a water change, and they seemed to perk up a bit, but they were all done by this morning.
I've decided that if I'm serious about this raising babies thing, I'm going to have to take things more seriously. I'm going to try drilling one of the 10 gallon tanks I have for raising the fry. That way I can plumb it right into my system. I think what probably happened is the brine shrimp I put in the tiny tank fouled the water, tho I'm not completely sure as I didn't test it. Oh well.
