Just currious Lori, what are you going to be bringing to Greg's store to try to help with the hair algae? I'd like to know so I can keep track of whether it works or not incase the dreded HA pops up again in one of my tanks.

I am not like others. I added an amemone fairly soon in my tank. As a matter of fact it was one of the first things in my tank, and it is doing wonderful. I first got a couple of blue damsels, then a clownfish, then a purple LTA, next was another anemone. The stupid clown wouldn't go in either, so then I got a skunk clown. Everything is doing fine, and I am not having any problems with the livestock.
o each their own though.

I stopped by to see Greg about 11;30 and brought a couple of different things. For the tank without hair algae(his tank with just base rock and a few corals) I brought along some purple corraline algae chips from my tank to "seed" his tank with the corraline and hopefully get it started. If the corraline takes off it should take over the less desirable algaes that may crop up.
For the hair algae tank, I brought along a product called Algone. It is a packet (like a large tea bag) that you add to tank/sump area. Look it up at algone com to see the before and after pics. I have always been curious to see if it works, and Greg was willing to give it a shot in his internationaly infamous hair algae tank.

I have heard of the product algone, but my battle with hair algae never got bad enough to risk killing my corals to see if it works. I'll be interested to find out the results.

Check out the website, it is all natural and safe. I have had it in my tank for a year(since I set up) and never had a problem with it affecting my corals. I really do not know how well it works at removing the algae since I have never had the algae to test it on. Gregs tank should be a good test for it.
I know at the website they also talk about it clearing water, and one thing I know I hear all the time is how clear my water looks, so I think it has really helped for that.

When we first got this tank, some of what was included was a half empty box of algone.
It's really just a phosphorous/nitrate/ammonia absorbing medium in a packet.
It DOES help keep that brown slimy algae that grows on glass to a minimum though.
Of course, so does adding snails, regulating lighting, watching nutrient levels, and doing frequent small water changes. But, mostly regulating lighting.

My problem with hair algae came after I had to remove and treat all of my fish for ick. Never again will I add fish without quarantining first. It sucks pulling out 250Lbs+ of rock and all of the corals just to catch a couple of fish. My readings for nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate are always zero. I usually try to do a 5 gallon water change every weekend that I am home. I clean my glass about twice a week with a magfloat and us a razor blade every couple of months.
I usually do not trust what the bottle says as far as being "reef safe". I have heard too many horror stories about killing off corals while streating with some reef safe product.
