I'm a firm believer that products' claims rarely live up to themselves. With the money I invest in my hobby, I'm always very careful about what goes in my tank. Obviously, I'm no expert. But, if it were me, I'd address an algae bloom by checking my water source and then doing a couple extra water changes in addition to the regular ones. If it's RO/DI water, I'd check it for phosphates and replace any components more than 6-12 months old, depending on how much water you make with it. If it's tap water, then I'd say that's your problem right there. Likely containing phosphates and other impurities that will allow algae to thrive in your system. If you've got RO/DI water and no problems, I'd assess the waste products accumulating in your system. I'd replace carbon in any filters and lightly clean the sand bed to remove any detritus that's accumulating. If you find it accumulating in particular spots, try to adjust water flow to help keep it from building up there. Next, I'd look at the
protein skimmer. It's probably the best way to keep water quality from decreasing. If it's performance is decreasing, clean it. If all of this checks out, then I'd cut back on the lights a little bit and feed a bit less. Over time, it should get better. If not, then keep reassessing the situation and you'll likely find out where the problem is occurring.
Without knowing exactly how your tank is set up and what's in it and what equipment you're running on it, I can't really pinpoint anything. But, algae is directly related to water quality. So, by improving water quality and finding out what's degrading it, you'll find the source of the
algae growth. Just my two cents.
As I've said, I'm no expert. But, chemicals designed to remove algae should warrant caution. See if others use them and would recommend them. The internet is great for things like that. I don't put anything into my tank unless people I respect in the hobby recommend it to others and me. If you don't have reliable guidance telling you to use this product, I'd stick with the basics and look toward improving water quality. That's what helped me with my algae problem when I first started in the hobby.
I hope this helps. Good luck, and keep us posted.
