coral banded shrimp

Does anyone know the life span of coral banded shrimp? I've had mine over a year now, and he's not doing well. He lost one of his big claws and then had a molt go poorly and his antennae are short and curly-ish and he was just sitting around. He was big when I got him and was really quite huge in his prime (with antennae spread he must have been close to a foot across). I thought maybe something was up in the tank (he was in the 44 gallon) so I moved him to my nano to try to rest up, but the other inverts in the big tank seem to be ok (cleaner shrimp, pistol shrimp, etc.). He's just been laying around the back of my nano tank. I'm just wondering if he might just be getting old, but I have no idea how long they live. Does anyone know the average life span of a cbs?

if it is infact old age then the question really revolves around how old he was when you got him. I would guess he was in his prime when you got him if he was that big, so maybe it is just about his time.

Well, he's looking a little perkier than he was the other day. He molted again and now has both big claws and his antennae are much better looking than last time. He's still not moving around very much, but maybe the change of scenery did him some good. Now he's in a little 12 gallon nano tank with a big cleaner shrimp and a peppermint shrimp, though. So far they are all playing nicely, will they be compatible in such a small space?

My coral banded, in my 75, went nuts a few days ago and killed my cleaner shrimp. Pinched his tail off and let him die. They had been together for about 6 months with no issues at all.

Ohh that's kind-of scary Liza. Watch them close.

I love my ppm! He's just so cute and friendly.

yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. When he was feeling better I've seen my cbs pinch my yellow tang by the lips and go for a ride across the tank, but I've never seen him act aggressive with anyone else (I've got a 3 stripe damsel for that). I'll have to keep an eye on him and see if he's feeling good enough to go back to the bigger tank.

Just a friendly reminder...iodine is necessary for proper molting. And regular water changes will keep iodine where it needs to be, so no need for dosing.

thanks, all the other shrimp and crabs in the tank seemed to be molting fine and I do add trace elements to both tanks on occasion along with water changes, but I'll keep it in mind.

I also add a drop or two once in a while besides the WC and they molt that day.

he molted and is looking good compared to before. He's just hanging in the back of my nano still and doesn't move around much, but that works out ok since my cleaner shrimp just moved house to the front of the tank. He's never been too aggressive unless provoked, but he did give my tang a nasty nose pinch. The tang was always trying to get him to clean her. She would hover around and pester the shrimp and he got tired of it. I've put a cleaner shrimp in that tank too, but the tang never looks at it and would still go to the cbs. Silly critter. I think it's love.
