baby clowns
So my skunk clowns have been laying eggs regularly lately. Which is good. So last night was the first time I have seen they hatch, and have the babies try and swim around my tank. So I took as many of the babies out, and put them in a smaller tank I have. Don't know what to do with them though. They have lasted 24hrs now. Mixed up a concoction of food for them, and they seem to be eating it. Anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to get them to survive?

I'd try WetWebMedia. They have a wealth of info, and I'm sure some of it involves raising the little guys.

well as far as I no the ones I had are all gone. Just thought I would give it a try. It seems so hard to get them at the right time. Like I said before that is the first time that I had seem them hatch. Was there at the right time I guess.

Chuck (chazz-66) tried raising some clown from eggs. I don't know how long he got them to survive but he could possibly give you some tips. I don't think he ever got them to survive entirely though.

Hey Tom, I did see them hatch in the night but by next morning they were all gone.I have had many clutches of eggs go into the tank as food Someday maybe I will have the time and room to try raising them. The book Clownfishes is an excellent book and has alot of good info.

Yeah mine also hatched at night. I happened to walk out and look in the tank. Just the moon lights on, and my fish were swimming around. Which is unusual, they usually go and hide at dark. So I looked closer, and it was like a feeding frenzy with these tiny little fish. The ones I was able to catch lasted almost 2 days, but the ones in the tank were gone by morning like you said chuck. I don't know if the little tank I put them in had very good water. Just a 5 gallon with a mushroom 2lbs LR, and some miscellaneous crab I pulled out of my big tank. Didn't have the heart to kill him, and I don't know what kind he is. I suppose I will have more chances to try with the babies in the furture.

just wondering would one of the fry holders that you get from walmart work next time? For the most part they are plastic with a netting around them. They worked great in FW and they only cost like 4 bucks. It just connects on top of your tank ??

I've never tried to raise baby clowns, but I think from the little that I've read that it's more a problem of feeding them and maintaining filtration... They're so tiny that filtration is difficult, and I believe they need a constant supply of food throughout the day. I could be wrong... So a FW fry holder may work to hold them, but you still have to deal with feedings. If anything, the baby clowns are probably a good food source for corals etc. and benefit the tank even if they don't grow up to be adult size.

Tom, your tank must have changed so much since we saw the pics last year. We would love to see new pics.

You need to get a clownfish breeding book, you also need to get Phytoplankton starts going to prep to feed your rotis, or try artemia ( baby brine), there is a lot of work involved, most people dont have the time or patience. You also need to be getting your clown fish adults on the best diet you can to product good clutches, I wouldnt even bother with trying to raise the first 3 months or so of clutches. Wait and get on good diet and the clutch numbers will increase. there is a slew of info on the web.

food and feeding routine will be a starting challenge, and be prepaired to do TONS of water changes, the fish are to small to use a filter.
